Parry Field Lawyers is a growing full-service law firm with offices in Christchurch C*D, Riccarton, Rolleston, Hokitika, and Auckland.

Our aim is to provide sound legal advice and solutions which deliver the best practical outcome for our clients. Formed in 1948, Parry Field Lawyers operates in Riccarton in Christchurch, New Zealand, and has developed a strong reputation in both personal issues law and commercial / corporate law. Parry Field’s founders, Glyn Parry and Brian Field, were both very good lawyers in commercial law, and general practice respectively. They were also heavily involved in church and charitable matters. This brought a strong ethical element into their practice and this has been handed down. The current partners and legal staff enjoy work with a wide range of highly successful companies and businesses of all sizes as well as a large number of churches, charities and individuals. There is an expectation amongst Parry Field lawyers that good relationships with clients are of the utmost importance without compromising professional integrity. There is also an expectation that each lawyer in Parry Field contributes to the wider community outside work hours in appropriate ways. Last week, our team joined the SWELL Seniors' Lifestyle Expo in Selwyn.

It was a great opportunity to connect with local residents, answer questions, and chat about the practical advice and support available from our Rolleston office.

Today, we have released a new paper: The Leaky Bucket: Analysing the proposed changes for Donation Tax Credits.

New Zealand’s Donation Tax Credit system is intended to encourage charitable giving, but many donors do not claim the one-third tax credit available to them. That means money which could potentially support charities is effectively “leaking” out of the system.

Proposed changes would allow donors to transfer their Donation Tax Credit directly to the charity they supported. We welcome that change, but this paper considers how the system could go further – including allowing donors to make that choice at the time they make their donation

On Wednesday 21 October at 12.00pm, Steven Moe will host a free webinar discussing the paper, the proposed changes, and what this could mean in practice for charities and donors.

We are also inviting people who support our proposed improvements to add their name to a submission on the Donation Tax Credit changes.

Are you properly separating trust funds from personal funds?

A trust can be an effective structure for asset protection, succession planning, and managing family wealth. However, the benefits of a trust depend on it being properly administered.

One issue that can create problems for trustees and beneficiaries is the mixing of trust funds with personal funds. Trust assets should not be treated as if they are personally owned by the settlor, trustees, or beneficiaries.

Last week, members of our team had the privilege of supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand in Ōtautahi Christchurch, preparing and cooking an evening meal for the families staying there.

We’ve been fortunate to support Ronald McDonald House in this way for a number of years – a small contribution to support families who need to be away from home while their child receives medical treatment.
