The Big Sleepout is coming up on 13 August and our team of Cora Granger, Judith Bullin, and Paul Owens will be sleeping outside for one winter night for an important cause.
The event aims to help raise funds and awareness of homelessness in Ōtautahi Christchurch and support Christchurch Methodist Mission’s work in our community, including homelessness outreach, housing placements, emergency support, nursing services, and wraparound support for people and whānau.
For Cora, taking part in the Big Sleepout is a small but meaningful way to raise awareness of housing deprivation and encourage our community to support people experiencing homelessness.
“I’m taking part in the Big Sleepout because, as of 2024, there were over 112,500 individuals in Aotearoa New Zealand who were severely housing deprived, and those numbers likely don’t even truly represent the gravity of the present housing need.
These statistics are heart-breaking, and sleeping out for the night is a small token to show support and bring awareness to my wider network.
There is significant housing need in Christchurch, but there is also a lot of privilege. By taking part, I hope to encourage our community to come together and support Christchurch Methodist Mission’s work with people experiencing homelessness.”
