In the latest episode of Legal Matters on The Rural Roundup, Andy Thompson teams up with Mark Tavendale and Mark Copeland to wrap up their succession and wealth series. Tune in as they dig into how farm succession unfolds across both the North and South Island and whether succession is simpler on a small family farm or within a larger multi-farm enterprise. Listen in now!

Today on The Rural Roundup we wrap up our multi-week look at succession as part of Legal Matters with Tavendale & Partners, expertly navigating the primary sector's legal landscape.

For the finale, Andy was joined by:
Mark Tavendale – South Island
Mark Copeland – North Island

We compare how succession plays out across both islands, ask whether being a cashed-up dairy operation makes succession easier than on lower-return sheep, beef or cropping farms, and look at whether scale helps or hinders, is it simpler on a small family place or a larger multi-farm business?

Is your incorporated Society Ready for 2026?

There are major legal changes on the way, and we don’t want your society to get left behind.

In last week’s episode of On Farm Legal with The Rural Roundup, Partner Jonathan Pow unpacked new legislation that will affect thousands of community and rural organisations across New Zealand. Under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022, all existing incorporated societies must reregister by April 5th 2026.

With only a quarter of societies re-registered so far, it’s vital that groups act soon.
