As Kiwis, we love a bit of DIY and tackling renovations over the weekend. While that hands-on attitude can be rewarding, it can also come with risks. Not obtaining the right advice, or taking a "she'll be right" approach, can create problems further down the track, particularly when it comes time to sell your home.

What may seem like a straightforward bathroom upgrade today could become a costly issue tomorrow if the work hasn't been completed correctly or even if the works have been completed correct but have not obtain the correct approvals.

For many aspiring homeowners, purchasing a property on their own can seem out of reach. With house prices continuing to rise and wages often failing to keep up the pace, saving a deposit and meeting lending requirements can be challenging.

As a result, purchasing a property with friends, siblings, parents, or other family members is becoming an increasingly popular way to get a foot on the property ladder.

Today marks a special milestone for Godfreys Law as we celebrate two years at Godfreys Law House.

The past two years have brought exciting change, growth and new opportunities, and we are proud to call this location home.

When our team were asked what they enjoy most about our premises, they were quick to mention the proximity to 8 Degree Café (a firm favourite here), alongside having Hagley Park on our doorstep and the spacious staff room for our morning teas and celebrations. There are many aspects to enjoy about our location, including client parking out front, the views and easy access to the city centre.

As we celebrate this anniversary, we are grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey. A big thank you to our clients, colleagues, professional contacts, friends and supporters. We appreciate the support you have all shown.

Last week, Selena Kim represented Godfreys Law through her attendance at the Canterbury Women's Legal Association Professional Women's Conference. Godfreys Law continues to be a proud sponsor of this event for the second year running, with Maddy Currie serving on the board of trustees for this great organisation.
The annual CWLA conference brings together professionals from across a range of industries, with the focus this year being Growing Professional Expertise in a Changing Landscape.

Selena and Maddy enjoyed a great day of connecting with other likeminded professionals, engaging with a range of speakers and taking the opportunity to learn and reflect on the topics at hand.

Thank you to Maddy and the Canterbury Women's Legal Association for putting on another fantastic annual event. Godfreys Law is proud to be a part of an event that stands for collaboration and growth across the legal profession and beyond.

Signing a commercial lease is one of the more significant commitments a New Zealand business can make. While an Agreement to Lease may look brief, it binds the tenant to the standard terms of a full Deed of Lease, which are more detailed. Before signing, tenants should understand the commercial deal, the hidden cost drivers, and the practical limits on changing or exiting the lease later.

INTRODUCING: Samuel Mullins - Associate

Following completion of a BA majoring in Political Science at the University of Otago, Sam finished his LLB (Hons) at the University of Canterbury in 2017. Sam later relocated to Nelson, where he developed extensive experience in property, commercial, and corporate law. In 2023, he moved to London to work for the Government Legal Department, providing advice on a diverse range of commercial legal matters, including competition, procurement, and subsidy law. Returning to his hometown of Christchurch, Sam joined Godfreys in 2026 as a member of our Conveyancing and Commercial teams.

Sam is a focused lawyer whose primary motivation is getting the transaction completed in a manner which best promotes his client’s interests. He advises on all aspects of commercial and property law, including land and business transactions. Sam is responsive and always endeavouring to distill complex legal issues in a manner that his clients can understand and act on.

When not in his office, Sam trains Brazilian Ju-Jitsu and tries to keep fit at the gym. He loves a good book and does his best make time for films and family.

✨ A wonderful evening of festive cheer, great food, and even better company at the Godfreys Law Midwinter Christmas Dinner!
Christmas came early this year for us at Godfreys Law as the team gathered to celebrate Midwinter Christmas. It was a wonderful evening filled with great food, good company, and plenty of festive cheer.

Taking time to come together outside the office is always something we value, and the evening provided a fantastic opportunity to connect, share a few laughs, and reflect on the year so far. With the delicious meal and great conversations around the table, it was a memorable night enjoyed by all.
