🇳🇿 NEW ZEALAND’S SKILLED MIGRANT CATEGORY IS CHANGING

From 24 August 2026, the existing Points-based pathway will continue alongside two new pathways—providing three potential routes under the Skilled Migrant Category.

🔹 1. POINTS-BASED PATHWAY

Applicants must obtain six points from:

✅ A recognised qualification
✅ Eligible occupational registration
✅ Income

The six points may come from one skill category alone or, where required, a combination of one skill category and eligible skilled work experience in New Zealand.

🔹 2. SKILLED WORK EXPERIENCE PATHWAY

Key requirements include:

✅ Employment or a job offer in an ANZSCO skill level 1–3 occupation
✅ At least three years of directly relevant work experience
✅ An additional two years of skilled work experience in New Zealand
✅ New Zealand skilled work paid at least 1.1× the applicable SMC wage threshold

For Amber List occupations, applicants generally need five years of eligible relevant work experience gained in New Zealand, including two years of skilled work paid at least 1.2× the applicable SMC wage threshold.

🔹 3. TRADES AND TECHNICIAN PATHWAY

Key requirements include:

✅ Employment in an eligible specified trade or technician occupation
✅ A relevant Level 4 or higher qualification
✅ At least 2.5 years of relevant post-qualification work experience
✅ An additional 1.5 years of skilled post-qualification work experience in New Zealand
✅ New Zealand skilled work paid at or above the applicable SMC wage threshold

The way expressions of interest are selected for the Parent Resident Visa is changing, moving to a hybrid model where most expressions of interest will be selected in date order.

Under the new model, 90% of the EOIs will be selected from the queue chronologically, while 10% will continue to be selected by ballot to reach the annual cap of 2500 places.

The Parent Resident Visa remains capped at 2,500 visas each financial year. The final draw under the current ballot system for the Parent Resident Visa will take place on Tuesday 11 August.

As at 23 July 2026, there were 7,706 valid EOIs in the Parent Resident Visa ballot pool, representing 11,602 people.

Important INZ Update: Police Certificates Must Be Provided Upfront

Immigration New Zealand has announced that police certificates must now be provided upfront for student visa and other temporary visa applications where they are required. This update was published on 1 July 2026.

In simple terms, this means applicants should not lodge the visa application until the required police certificate is ready. INZ has clearly said that a receipt or confirmation showing that the applicant has applied for a police certificate will not normally be accepted.

If a required police certificate is missing, INZ may assess the application based on the documents already provided. The application may be declined, or in some cases, the visa may be granted for a shorter duration. INZ has also stated that they will not usually contact applicants to request a missing police certificate.

For student, work, visitor and AEWV applications, police certificates are generally required if the applicant’s total time in New Zealand will be 24 months or more across all visits. This can include time already spent in New Zealand on previous visas.

Police certificates must usually be less than 6 months old when the visa application is submitted, and if the certificate is not in English, an English translation must also be provided.

There are limited exceptions for applicants from Fiji, Hong Kong and Israel, where police certificates are sent directly to INZ by the issuing authority. In these cases, applicants can upload proof that they have applied for the certificate.
