Immigration New Zealand has announced changes to student visa settings from today, 27 October 2026.

⏱️ Master's by Research students move to standard work rights: up to 25 hours a week while studying and full-time during vacations. This applies to all new Master's students who apply on or after 27 October.

📅 Student visas will be granted for 2 months after the course end date instead of 1 month. Visas that would usually expire on 31 March are unchanged.

💬 Immigration officers may request evidence of English language ability, such as an approved test, where they are concerned an applicant's ability isn't consistent with their proposed study.

⏸️ Visa processing can be suspended while concerns about an education provider are being investigated, not only after non-compliance has been found.

Congratulations to our clients, a couple whose Parent Resident Visa application has been approved in principle by Immigration New Zealand.

Approved in principle is not the end of the process. It means INZ will grant the resident visa once the remaining requirements are met.

Worth knowing if you're thinking about sponsoring your parents: selection under the Parent Resident Visa changed on 5 October 2026. All valid expressions of interest are now in a single pool, with about 90% selected in date order through a queue and about 10% through a random ballot. The annual limit of 2,500 approvals in principle is unchanged.

𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐀–𝐍𝐙 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐃𝐄 𝐀𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓: 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐀 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐌𝐈𝐓𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒

The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement came into force on 20 October 2026, bringing new visa commitments for Indian nationals.

💼 Two new work visa categories — the India Skilled Work Visa and the India Iconic Work Visa, both Temporary Employment Entry pathways. Up to 5,000 holders in New Zealand at any one time, with most places going to occupations already on the Green List. Valid for 3 years, with no pathway to residence.

🎓 Post-study work rights — from 16 November 2026, Indian graduates with a New Zealand PhD can get post-study work visas of up to 4 years instead of 3.

📖 In-study work — eligible students of all nationalities can currently work up to 25 hours a week. The FTA commits to 20 hours a week for Indian students should policy settings change in future.

🧳 Working holiday scheme — a scheme for Indian nationals aged 18 to 30 is to be introduced within two years of the FTA coming into force.

The important detail: these are not open-door pathways. Applicants still need a qualifying job offer from an accredited employer and must meet qualification, English, health, character and identity requirements. The new work visas also don't lead to residence, so if residence is your goal, the Skilled Migrant Category or another residence pathway is the conversation to have.

BNZ joins the Funds Transfer Scheme

Immigration New Zealand has announced that eligible international students studying at a New Zealand university or polytechnic can now choose the Bank of New Zealand as a provider under the Funds Transfer Scheme.

What this means:

🏦 Students at a university or polytechnic can now use either BNZ or ANZ

🎓 Students at Private Training Establishments continue to use ANZ, as BNZ isn't offering the scheme outside universities and polytechnics

🌏 The scheme is open to eligible students from China, India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Vietnam

The Funds Transfer Scheme is a secure way for eligible international students to transfer and access their money while studying in New Zealand. Showing you have sufficient funds is one of the requirements for a student visa, and the scheme is one of the accepted ways to do it.

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚: 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝

From 5 October 2026, all valid Parent Resident Visa expressions of interest have moved into a single pool under Immigration New Zealand's new hybrid selection model.

How selection now works:

✅ Around 90% of EOIs will be selected in date order through a queue
✅ Around 10% will be selected through a random ballot
✅ The annual limit of 2,500 approvals in principle stays the same
✅ The first selection round under the new model is set down for 10 November 2026

If you had a valid EOI on 5 October 2026, you don't need to do anything. Queue positions are still being finalised and aren't available yet, so there's no point calling INZ to ask for yours. They will contact eligible EOI holders directly once the information is ready.

What this means in practice: for most people, when your EOI was submitted now matters more than ever, because the bulk of selections follow the queue. The ballot gives a smaller share of applicants a chance outside that order.

A decline is not always the final word.

This Visitor Visa case was first declined by Immigration New Zealand.

After a careful review of the concerns raised in the decline, a correct reading of the applicable visitor instructions, and a fresh application supported by properly structured, evidence-based submissions, those concerns were addressed and the visa was approved.

This outcome is a reminder that the difficulty often lies not in the applicant's circumstances, but in how the evidence was presented and weighed against policy. With the right approach, a clear strategy, and submissions that speak directly to the instructions, a declined case can still reach a positive outcome.

📢 Planning to study in New Zealand? Apply early.

Immigration New Zealand has issued an update to licensed advisers: student visa applications should be lodged at least 3 months before your course starts. If all your documents are ready, you can apply even earlier.

INZ says this is especially important for students applying from India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, because of the high volume and complexity of applications from these countries. Late or incomplete applications may not be decided before you need to travel or start your studies.

✅ What INZ is asking students to do:

1️⃣ Choose the right visa – make sure the visa you apply for matches your study plans.

2️⃣ Submit a complete application – include only the documents that are needed, with clear and relevant evidence that can be verified. Unnecessary documents can slow down processing, and missing information can lead to a decline.

3️⃣ Keep your information up to date – if your contact details, course details, Offer of Place or enrolment status change after you apply, let INZ know as soon as possible.

🎓 Starting your course in February 2027? Your application should be lodged by November at the latest – and earlier is better.
