$450 an hour sounds like a LOT. Because it is. 😅

But you’re not necessarily paying for the time it takes me to say the answer. You’re paying for me to know what questions I need to ask before I can safely give you that answer.

I genuinely want to put as much free legal information out here as I can. If my content helps you understand something, find the right information or even avoid needing a lawyer altogether, that’s a win.

But there’s a line between general legal information and advice about your situation.

That “quick question” in my DMs might actually need documents reviewed, conflicts checked, more background, a proper client engagement and a whole lot more context before I can tell you what you should actually do.

So keep asking questions in the comments. I’ll keep explaining the legal stuff for free wherever I can.

And when the answer is “you need to speak to a lawyer”… now you know why. 😂

Imagine buying a café… and then finding out you’re not actually allowed to sell coffee. ☕️

Yep. That happened.

Buried in the lease was an exclusivity clause giving another tenant in the same centre the exclusive right to sell coffee.

And unfortunately, “we just won’t advertise it” wasn’t a workaround.

The result? A very expensive problem that could have been picked up before the business was purchased.

Commercial leases are full of clauses that can seriously affect how you operate your business, from what you can sell, to when you can open, what signage you can use, and even whether you can sell the business later.

The legal review before you sign might feel like another cost.

Finding out afterwards that your lease stops you doing something fundamental to your business costs a whole lot more.

Moral of the story: get the lease checked before you sign. Especially if coffee is involved. ☕️

Why is it so hard to find out what a lawyer is actually going to cost you?

Buying, selling or refinancing a house already comes with enough costs. Your legal bill shouldn’t be another unknown at the end of it.

At Blackhawk Law, we’re doing things a little differently.

For our standard conveyancing work, we offer genuinely fixed fees and transparent pricing, so you know what you’re paying before we get started.

And fixed fee doesn’t mean you can’t call your lawyer. In fact, I want you to call me if you have questions. I don’t want clients sitting at home Googling something they don’t understand because they’re worried every phone call is adding to their bill.

If something comes up outside the standard scope, we’ll talk to you about it and any additional cost before we do the extra work.

I’m based at Blackhawk Law in Pukekohe, but conveyancing can largely be handled remotely, so you don’t need to be local to work with us.

When does settlement happen? Well the answer is - we don't know!! 🤷🤷 It can happen any time from 8:30am - 4pm (or between 4 - 430pm as a late settlement). My best piece of advice? Don't plan to move on settlement day and move the day after!!

Charging every 6 minutes genuinely doesn't work so we're changing that 🤷 happy lawyers make happy clients and that's how we should be doing business!

Big news 🖤

I’m so excited to finally share that I’m joining Blackhawk Law as a Senior Associate.

A huge thank you to Ross for backing me, believing in what I can bring to Blackhawk, and giving me an opportunity that I’m incredibly excited to grow into. There are some pretty big plans ahead, and I feel very lucky to be stepping into a role where I can think beyond just the next file or the next year.

I’m also really excited to be staying local, continuing to work with the people and businesses in our community, and bringing everything I’ve built over the last 11 years into this next chapter.

Blackhawk, here I come. 🖤
