As students head back to school, a few simple safety conversations can help families feel more prepared.

Our team encourages parents and caregivers to review these back-to-school basics:

• Make sure your child knows their full name, home address, your phone number, and a trusted adult they can contact.

• Talk through safe routes to school, including crosswalk use, looking both ways, and avoiding distractions near traffic.

• Remind children never to get into a vehicle or leave school with anyone unless you have discussed it in advance.

• Keep backpacks manageable by using both straps and avoiding unnecessary weight.

• Discuss bullying, when to speak up, and which adults at school can help them feel safe.

• Label belongings discreetly. Put names inside backpacks and lunch boxes rather than displaying a child’s first name on the outside.

Whether your child walks, bikes, rides the bus, gets dropped off, or drives themselves, a few simple reminders can help make the trip safer:

• Walkers: Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.
• Bicyclists: Wear a properly fitted helmet, follow traffic rules, and choose routes with fewer busy intersections.
• Bus riders: Stay well back from the curb, wait until the bus stops completely, and never cross near the bus without the driver’s acknowledgment.
• Parents at drop-off: Slow down in school zones, follow the school’s traffic pattern, and never pass a stopped school bus.
