After months without essential in-home support, LCE client Ms. G. knew she couldn’t wait any longer.

A 66-year-old woman with disabilities, Ms. G contacted us after going three months without a home healthcare aide. Ms. G shared that she had fallen twice and knew she could not safely continue without in home support.

We immediately connected Ms. G with a DC agency that could help. The very next day, we learned her application had been expedited — and by the following week, she was receiving the services she needed to remain safe at home.

LCE client Mr. M invited a friend to stay with him — unaware that the situation would quickly become dangerous. When property damage followed, Mr. M faced eviction. As we looked more closely, we discovered the “friend” was abusing Mr. M and posed a physical threat to him and his neighbors.

At first, Mr. M struggled to recognize the risk he was facing. Over time, he began to trust our team and understand how vulnerable his situation had become. We secured a Civil Protective Order to remove the individual from Mr. M’s home and successfully negotiated a settlement that allowed him to remain safely housed, without the risk of eviction.

This is what advocacy looks like when housing stability and dignity are on the line. ⤵️

When an elevator outage made her apartment inaccessible, a 69-year-old client with a disability was forced to temporarily relocate to a hotel. Although her property manager initially agreed to credit the hotel cost, that promise was later withdrawn — and late fees were added on top of it.

We stepped in and held the landlord accountable, securing the hotel credit for the client and removing the improper fees.

A 65-year-old client faced eviction for alleged non-payment of rent totaling $2,750. LCE saw that the debt included unjustified funds on the property management’s ledger, and was able to get the case dismissed and the debt waived. The ledger was from a former property management company and no longer valid.

LCE helped a client facing eviction receive $2,604 in compensation for the loss of her belongings after her landlord refused to let her reenter the apartment to collect them. An LCE pro bono attorney negotiated the settlement for the client, who is now in a new apartment.

When the son of a 74-year-old client died unexpectedly, our client fell behind on her property taxes. She subsequently faced a foreclosure suit filed by her reverse mortgage company, putting her at risk of losing her home. We helped save the home after working with the client to submit a successful application to a DC housing program for $23,082 that paid the debt, allowing her to keep her home.
