An Oklahoma City attorney infected with COVID-19 was released from the hospital on Sunday, but is still on the road to recovery. Chris Sloan, 44, had home health nurses visit him on Monday to help with oxygen levels.

Help us give a shout out to our very own Genie Baumann! Congratulations on such a well deserved award. Thank you for all you have done to teach, mentor and guide lawyers to be courageous, forgiving, and compassionate advocates.

The 2019 recipient of the Alma Wilson Award is Eugenia “Genie” Baumann for her significant contribution to improving the lives of Oklahoma children.

Ms. Baumann is a retired public defender in Oklahoma County who has chosen to come back and work part time for the Oklahoma County Public Defender’s Office. She is the true caretaker of any delinquent child that enters the Oklahoma juvenile system.

While she may be working part time in the public defender’s office, she spends most, if not all, of her week in court or in the PD’s office helping younger attorneys decipher the complex system of the juvenile court. Not only does she impart or share wisdom with other public defenders, she also helps private attorneys. She is not hesitant to look out for the best interests of every juvenile defendant whether he or she has a private attorney or public defender.

Ms. Baumann’s focus is to help every young defendant in the juvenile system. She is a warrior who is sometimes overlooked because she defends juvenile delinquents. She believes “if we help these kids out correctly, we will never see them again.”

Ms. Baumann works tirelessly day in and day out to make sure Oklahoma children’s lives are improved, even the ones who may not be the most desired by the “system.” She began her career with the Public Defender’s Office Juvenile Division in 1980 and received her J.D. from the TU College of Law in 1976.

A fabulous time was had by all at the 2018 OCCDLA annual Christmas Party held at Coyle Law Firm!

The Oklahoma County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (OCCDLA) held its 8th annual Christmas Party on Thursday, December 6 at the Coyle Law Firm in downtown Oklahoma City. The organization holds the event each year to celebrate the holiday season and to honor several of members of the legal community. Festivities were hosted by OCCDLA past president, John Coyle, and his son Billy Coyle the group’s current president.

Three awards were given to members of the legal community for their outstanding service: the President’s Award went to outgoing Judges Bill Graves and Michele McElwee. The prestigious Barry & Johnny Albert Award (formerly the Barry Albert Award) was bestowed to public defender Thomas F. Hurley and the Robert A. Manchester Lifetime Achievement Award was given to attorney Paul S. Faulk.
