Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Forty-Fourth Annual Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Conference in Harrisonburg, Virginia, with my esteemed colleagues, founders of G. Best Husband Law, PLLC and Pervaiz & Harley PLLC .

It was a great opportunity to step away from the day-to-day practice of law and spend time learning, reflecting, and engaging in thoughtful conversations about legal ethics and professional responsibility.

Being a good attorney isn't just about knowing the law. Itโ€™s also about continuing to learn, holding yourself to high professional standards, and remembering the responsibility we have to our clients and our profession.

Iโ€™m grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside such wonderful colleagues and to continue growing in my practice.

Most of the work that makes a difference in a case happens long before anyone walks into a courtroom.

Reviewing evidence. Researching Virginia law. Preparing strategy. Communicating with clients.

Every case deserves careful preparationโ€”not assumptions.

If you're facing a traffic charge, criminal accusation, or you've been injured in a Virginia car accident, understanding your options early can make a difference.

Not every continuance is bad news.

Sometimes both sides need additional time to negotiate. That extra time can allow your attorney to gather more information, discuss possible resolutions with the prosecutor, or work toward an outcome that may be better than rushing the case to court.

While waiting can be frustrating, a continuance may provide valuable opportunities that wouldn't exist if the case moved forward too quickly.

If your court date gets continued, it doesn't always mean something has gone wrong.

Sometimes a continuance is requested because someone who is essential to the case simply isn't available on the scheduled court date. That could be your attorney, the prosecutor, a key witness, or even the officer involved in the case.

Every case is different, and a continuance can help ensure everyone has the opportunity to properly prepare and present the case.

Have questions about your Virginia traffic or criminal case? Understanding the process can help reduce the uncertainty.

Does a continuance mean something went wrong with your case?

Not necessarily.

One of the most common reasons a case is continued is because one side needs additional time to prepare. That could mean waiting for important evidence, reviewing discovery, interviewing witnesses, or gathering records that could make a difference in the outcome of the case.

While it can be frustrating to return to court another day, taking the time to fully prepare is often far better than rushing into trial without all of the facts.

Watch this Short to learn why continuances happen and what they could mean for your case.

You have prepared for your court date. You took time off work. You arranged child care. You have spent weeks wondering what will happen.

Then, just as your case is called, the judge says: "Your case is continued."

Now what?

A continuance does not necessarily mean something has gone wrong, but it can leave you with more questions than answers. In this Short, I explain what a continuance means in Virginia courts, why it happens, and what you should expect if it happens in your case.

Many CDL holders know that repeat serious traffic violations can have consequences, but some offenses can result in CDL disqualification after just a single conviction.

These offenses may include DWI, unlawful refusal of a blood or breath test, leaving the scene of an accident, using a commercial vehicle in the commission of a felony, and making fraudulent statements on a CDL application.

In my latest video, I explain why commercial drivers should understand their legal options as early as possible when facing these allegations.

Many commercial drivers assume a speeding or reckless driving ticket is just another traffic offense. In reality, certain violations are classified as "serious traffic violations" and can have significant consequences for your Commercial Driver's License.

In this video, I explain why CDL holders should never treat these charges like an ordinary traffic ticket and why repeat violations can lead to disqualification.
