For generations, the Thrifty Drug Store on North Canon Drive was more than just a pharmacy — it was part of the rhythm of everyday life in Beverly Hills. Opened in the early 1970s, the store became a neighborhood institution long before it was converted to Rite Aid following Rite Aid’s acquisition of the iconic Southern California-based Thrifty chain in 1996. Even then, many longtime locals still simply called it “Thrifty.”

Like many classic neighborhood drug stores, it was more than a place to fill prescriptions. Residents stopped in for everyday essentials, ran into neighbors, and shared memories around the famous Thrifty Ice Cream counter that became a Southern California tradition in its own right.

Its recent closure marked the end of more than 50 years on Canon Drive — the kind of loss communities feel deeply, especially in a place like Beverly Hills where longtime local businesses become woven into the identity of the city itself.

Now, CVS is set to take over the longtime location, bringing renewed energy and an important community service back to one of Beverly Hills’ most familiar corners. The return of a neighborhood drug store to Canon Drive is a welcome addition for residents once again. And if longtime locals had one wish, it would probably be this: bring back the famous Thrifty Ice Cream counter too.
