Conflict is rarely just about “the other person.”
One of the hardest and most important parts of repairing relationships is having the self-awareness to ask:

• How might my behaviour have contributed to this?
• What impact did my words, tone, silence, assumptions or reactions have, even if unintended?
• What might the other person have experienced from me?

That doesn’t mean taking responsibility for things that aren’t yours. It means being willing to genuinely reflect on your own part, real or perceived, because perception shapes relationships too.

A few ways to check yourself in conflict:

1. Pause before defending. Listen for understanding, not rebuttal.
2. Ask trusted people for honest feedback.
3. Notice recurring patterns across different relationships or situations.
4. Be curious about the other person’s experience, even when you disagree with it.
5. Separate intention from impact - good intentions don’t always prevent hurt.

Ask yourself: “What could I have done differently?”

Self-awareness in conflict isn’t weakness.
It’s emotional maturity. And often, it’s the difference between repeating the same patterns and creating healthier relationships moving forward.

Yesterday’s DiSC workshop was one for the books. Right from the start the banter was flowing, the energy was high, and the belly laughs were real. What an absolute privilege to work with a team that showed up with openness, honesty, humour, and a willingness to learn more about themselves and each other.

In my work as a mediator, I see it time and again — when conversations escalate, it’s rarely the words alone that determine the outcome, it’s the emotional temperature in the room.

A principle I come back to often: “The calmest nervous system in the room is the leader of the conversation.”

If you’re heading into a tough conversation, a few practical reminders:
• Slow yourself down — your pace sets the tone
• Reduce your volume
• Sit back physically, pause and breathe
• Listen to understand, not to respond
• Name what you’re noticing without escalating it
• Stay anchored to the outcome you’re trying to achieve, not the emotion in front of you

These moments don’t require perfection — they require presence, control, and intent. If you need a different outcome, start by managing what you bring into the room.
