What does a lawyer really do?

Lawyers don’t just argue in courtrooms or shout “Objection!” like on TV. In reality, here’s what we actually do - and why it matters:

1. We read the fine print (so you don’t have to)
Contracts, agreements, and small clauses can hide big problems. We make sure you understand exactly what you’re agreeing to.

2. We help protect big life decisions
Buying a house, writing a will, separating from a partner, starting a business - these are major moments. We help you do them legally and safely.

3. We spot risks before they become expensive
We’re trained to identify what could go wrong - and prevent it. That includes contract issues, property risks, tax implications, or disputes.

The threshold for High Court approval has increased from $15,000 to $40,000. This is great news for clients dealing with smaller estates as it means banks and Kiwisaver providers will be able to release funds without Court involvement.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a success - your support helped raise $320 for Selwyn Parenting Network with all ticket proceeds going directly to them. It’s amazing to see local businesses coming together not only to grow but to give back to the community.

We’re already planning the next event for October, so stay tuned - we’d love to see you there!

Thinking of appointing a company director? Read this first.

We often see small and medium family businesses appoint multiple directors—even when some family members aren’t involved in the day-to-day operations.

But being a director isn’t just a title. It comes with real legal responsibilities and potential liabilities under laws like the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and Companies Act 1993.

Before appointing a director, make sure it’s the right move—for your business and for the person stepping into the role.

Need advice on director responsibilities or company structure? We can help.

Three Common Mistakes When Drafting Business Terms and Conditions:

Lack of Detail – Leaving out important information can create confusion and expose your business to risk.

Overly Complex Language – Using legal jargon or unclear wording makes the terms hard for customers to understand.

Failing to Update – Not reviewing your terms regularly means they may become outdated or non-compliant with current laws.

Getting your terms and conditions right is essential. Well-drafted terms set clear expectations, help you get paid on time, and provide protection if a dispute arises.

We help businesses draft and review their terms and conditions to ensure they're written in plain English, easy to understand, and tailored to the way your business operates.

Difference between Shareholders and Directors?

While shareholders in a company are the owners of a company, their role is passive except in relation to the approval of major transactions. Shareholders do not have a role in the management or strategic planning of the company - that is the role of the directors.

You don't have to be a shareholder to be a director and there can be a lot of benefit in having an independent director.

How much say a shareholder has in the company will depend on the voting rights set out in the company's constitution or the shareholders agreement.

Not sure what your rights are? Get in touch to find out more.
