Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is making 3 changes to protect the integrity of student visas, and a fourth change to help students after they finish their course. These changes will take effect from 27 October 2026.

The changes are to the hours that Master’s-by-Research students can work, strengthen INZ’s powers to check and suspend applications, and increase the time some visas are valid for by one month.

New visa opportunities are opening for Indian professionals, students and young travellers!

✅ 2 NEW WORK VISA PATHWAYS

Temporary Employment Entry (TEE) visas for eligible skilled professionals.

Up to 5,000 visa holders in New Zealand at any one time.

Valid for 3 years, subject to eligibility requirements.

These visas do not provide a direct pathway to residence.

🎓 EXTENDED POST-STUDY WORK RIGHTS

From 16 November 2026, eligible Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs can qualify for up to 4 years of post-study work rights, instead of 3 years.

👨‍🎓 WORK RIGHTS FOR STUDENTS

Eligible students can currently work up to 25 hours per week.

The FTA also confirms a commitment to in-study work rights for Indian students.

✈️ NEW WORKING HOLIDAY SCHEME

For Indian nationals aged 18–30.

Up to 1,000 places annually.

Stay in New Zealand for up to 12 months.

Expected to be introduced within 2 years.
