From 1 June, AEWV holders applying for ANZSCO skill level 3 roles will need to meet English language requirements – likely affecting both recruitment and retention across several sectors.

Rachael Mason New Zealand Immigration Lawyer says the change will be most felt in industries that rely heavily on Level 3 roles that have not traditionally required formal English testing – for example, construction, trades and primary industries.

Employers should plan now for both entry requirements, and for retention and progression – read on for more about who will be impacted and what challenges to prepare for 👉 https://bit.ly/3RqjUrw

Part of the Government's broader "Going for Growth" programme, the changes are designed to make New Zealand a more attractive destination for foreign investment and high-net-worth individuals.

Our immigration and property teams have been closely following these reforms and are successfully engaging with the Overseas Investment Office on behalf of clients. The upcoming overhaul of the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa will likely help address labour shortages in some parts of the economy, according to Lane Neave's Rachael Mason New Zealand Immigration Lawyer when speaking to Radio New Zealand.

She said the changes give greater recognition to applicants' prior work experience, both overseas and in New Zealand.

"There was definitely a gap in the middle- and intermediate-level roles. We dealt with a lot of technician-type roles that didn't have a pathway. Employers were saying these were actually skilled roles and they can't find people."

📢 Foreign buyer ban lifted – new property purchase law passed!

The amendment opens a new pathway for Active Investor Plus (AI+), Investor 1, and Investor 2 visa holders, including permanent resident visa holders who held those visas, enabling them to purchase or build a home in New Zealand – even if they do not intend to become tax resident or live here permanently.

The new rules are expected to come into force in early 2026, with an exact date yet to be confirmed. Read more from our immigration and property law experts: https://www.laneneaveimmigration.co.nz/news-events/foreign-buyer-ban-lifted/
