This summer, Aaron Bundy earned the Advanced Certificate in Trusts: Law and Practice from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, known as STEP, the global professional body for the people who draft and administer trusts.
Why would a family law trial lawyer study trusts?
Trusts are where the money goes when a family has money. In the divorce and custody cases we try, we see family wealth held in trust for a spouse, business interests owned through a trust, trusts funded during the marriage, and spouses who receive distributions from a family trust. Every one of them raises the same questions. Who controls it? What is in it? Which law governs? Is there a marital property component? Can the court reach it?
STEP teaches trusts from the inside, the way trust professionals learn them: how trust instruments are drafted, how governing law is chosen, what a protector does, and the many kinds of trusts and what each is built to do. The course ended with a four hour examination.
Aaron is a family law trial lawyer, board certified for family law trials by the National Board of Trial Advocacy, a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Family Lawyers, and ranked in Band 1 by Chambers and Partners in the High Net Worth guide for Family/Matrimonial law. He is licensed in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, New York, and the District of Columbia.
