From ancient times the court of law has been about equality and impartiality as much as it has been about justice. Lady Justice is the best known symbol of this with her blindfold to ensure impartiality, her scales to weigh the arguments and her sword to bring justice. These are the qualities that made me want to become an attorney. As Thomas Jefferson said, “Equal rights for all, special privileges for none.”

Many people often find the idea of speaking to an attorney a daunting task. We recognize and celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day for everything that they shared, an continue to share with non-Indigenous People. We are VERY FORTUNATE that Tulsa County sits within the Cherokee Nation and Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

Despite the efforts of President Andrew Jackson and others at genocide, the tribes have made a phenomenal comeback. Throughout the history of the United States, natives have been treated horribly. Despite that, we are so fortunate that the tribes provide for their people; and for the non-tribal citizens as well that live within their tribal boundaries.

What happened at Cornell - the so called investigation -- is what happens when schools (secondary, vo-tech, universities, colleges) provide their own police force. Tulsa area schools have their own police force.

Campus security officers are often cross-deputies. That DOES NOT mean they should be investigating crimes. Crimes are the purview of actual law enforcement. Unfortunately, that is what is happening. Because of that crimes are not investigated for prosecution, but rather to keep the narrative contained and to minimize the public record. It all comes down to dollars and ratings.

There is a reason Tulsa Public Schools and the sounding schools have their own "police force". It is not about safety, it is about controlling the narrative and controlling what becomes public record.

When serious crimes are alleged, schools should be clear about who investigated, whether outside law enforcement was involved, and what independent review is available. Safety and accountability should go together. School security should contact law enforcement IMMEDIATELY to investigate allegations of sexual abuse.
