More than 5,000 passengers aboard Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas experienced an unexpected change of plans when a powerful nor’easter forced the cruise line to reroute its seven-night voyage from sunny Florida and the Bahamas to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Passengers reportedly received notice just hours before departure, leaving many unprepared for the drastic change in destination and temperatures.

Eight crew members aboard Princess Cruises’ Majestic Princess were reportedly deported from the Port of Boston on October 5, adding to growing concern and uncertainty among cruise ship workers entering U.S. ports.

According to Crew Center, seven Filipino crew members and one Indian national were reportedly removed after officials arrived with a list of names. The reasons for the reported deportations remain unclear, and the details have not been independently confirmed.

Reports like these are creating significant anxiety among crew members, some of whom are reportedly packing their belongings before arriving in U.S. ports because they fear they may unexpectedly be sent home. A tragic incident aboard Carnival Panorama is drawing renewed attention to safety and emergency response at sea.

According to reports, California passenger Thomas Gigler was traveling with his wife on an anniversary cruise when he went overboard from the ship. His family has since spoken publicly about the devastating loss.
