Thomson Reuters recently featured Partner Stephanie Hauser in its coverage of FinCEN’s proposed whistleblower rule, which implements the program established under the Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2020 and the Anti-Money Laundering Whistleblower Improvement Act of 2022. The proposal has sparked broader discussion about how the program may apply to international whistleblowers reporting money laundering, sanctions violations, and other cross-border financial crimes.

Drawing on her experience as a former federal prosecutor and her current work representing whistleblowers and fraud victims, Stephanie explained how international money laundering schemes often intersect with the U.S. financial system. She noted that these schemes frequently move through foreign financial institutions and offshore cryptocurrency exchanges.

Law360 recently featured Managing Partner Jeffrey Schneider in a Q&A focused on his role in the Jay Peak EB-5 visa fraud recovery effort, one of the largest investor fraud cases in U.S. history. The interview highlights his decade-long work supporting a court-appointed receiver in pursuing litigation and settlements to recover funds for hundreds of defrauded foreign investors.

The Daily Business Review recently featured LKLSG Managing Partner Jeffrey C. Schneider, who serves as counsel to court-appointed receiver Michael I. Goldberg of Akerman, in a profile examining the Jay Peak receivership.

The Jay Peak matter stems from one of the largest EB-5 fraud cases in the United States. Foreign investors contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to Vermont resort projects that regulators later found involved alleged misuse and commingling of funds.

The article notes that the receivership team has recovered more than $300 million through litigation and asset sales and has largely resolved the financial aspects of the case.

Jeff and Michael emphasize that the receivership has required more than financial recovery. It has required a dual focus on complex litigation strategy and a court-supervised effort to protect investors while preserving immigration outcomes for affected families.

As attorneys near the end of the Jay Peak receivership, immigration relief for EB-5 fraud victims remains the case’s final challenge. For lawyers watching the case, the receivership shows how litigation strategy can serve a broader court-supervised mandate.
