Halloween is Saturday. Sharing the night with your co-parent?

A few dos and don’ts from our Halloween co-parenting guide:

DO: Plan from your signed, filed court order, not a draft. Talk through schedules and traditions early. Put what makes Halloween fun for your kids first.

DON’T: Change the plan without notice. Argue in front of the kids. Be late for the exchange.

Can’t split the night? You can alternate years, with the off-year parent planning a different fall activity.

Can you use AI to handle your own divorce? You can use it to understand your divorce. Letting it write your court filings is where people get burned.

On October 2, the Nebraska Supreme Court threw out a self-represented man’s divorce appeal because the cases his brief cited were fake, invented by the AI tool he used to write it.

Where AI helps: explaining a term, turning legalese into plain English, organizing your documents, and drafting questions for a real lawyer.

Where it doesn’t: anything that goes to the court with your name on it. Will a judge know you used AI? Often, yes. Opposing counsel and court staff check citations, and a fake case is easy to spot once someone looks.

A high-profile Los Angeles custody case made headlines this month. Coverage described one parent reportedly paying a percentage of income above $2 million a year.

Isn’t child support just a formula? Not at that level.

You don’t have to be near $2 million to hit that line. The tables count both spouses’ income together, so plenty of two-income families land above it.

Every state’s child support tables stop at a set income. In our states, that’s between $336,000 and $520,000 of combined family income. Above it, a judge decides based on what the children reasonably need: school, activities, medical care, transportation, vacations, and who pays for each.
