⛑️ Cycling Helmets ⛑️

Love them? or loathe them?

When it comes riding your bike here in New Zealand in the public realm it is a legal requirement to wear one.

❓But did you last check your helmet?
❓How old is too old?
❓Do they expire?

Our team can often be found safety checking and repairing bikes but as part of our sessions our instructors check helmets are fitted correctly and are safe for use.

During a recent school session we identified a number of helmets which unfortunately had come to the end of their working lives due to cracks and structural damage.

👀 We recommend checking your and your kids helmets regularly, look for any signs of cracking in the foam, pull against the sides to check for hairline cracks.

💥If the foam is damaged/split in the event of a crash the helmet is unable to properly distribute forces and energy effectively and could/likely fail resulting in significant injury to the rider.

☠️ The typical lifespan of a helmet is about 3years from date of first use, but there are external factors which may decrease lifespan.
🗓️ Frequent daily use
🌞 Exposure to sun/UV/sweat
🤕 Crashes or impacts (if a crash occurs with a helmet impact, the helmet should be replaced!)
⛓️‍💥Low quality clips, straps, foams may lead to shorter lifespan.

🪖⛑️ Some brands (e.g Bell, Giro, Endura) offer incentives, if you crash your helmet and it needs replacing some of these brands will offer a replacement or cost contribution towards a replacement.

📆 If you are unsure how old your helmet is, look inside for the manufacturer label, this will give you a Date of Manufacture.
If it is 5+ years it is probably time to consider a new one.

We are excited to be supporting Go Eco with the first in series of FREE pop-up this Saturday at Western Community Centre.

⏰ Join us 10am-12pm.

Our head mechanic and some volunteers from Go Eco will be on hand to give you some helpful hints and tips to maintain/fix your bike.

ℹ️ This is not intended for full service or complex repairs, but an opportunity to learn some skills to fix and adjust the basics to maintain your bike safety.

We need repairers, tinkerers and DIYers in Kirikiriroa. Can you sew on a button, fix a flat tyre or get a toaster working again?

Volunteer at our community repair events and help locals fix everyday items like clothing, bikes and small electronics, then show them how to do it themselves next time, keeping useful things out of landfill.

While the rain is pouring, we are staying dry and relatively warm with help from our Hercules Instant Shelter.

A day of mahi, with our team on split duties supporting Hamilton City Council .
We have instructors teaching whilst the boss in on the tools, making sure more of Crawshaw School Bikes are safe and ready to ride.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls… we have great pleasure in announcing this years winner of “Puncture of the Year!”

Yes we know, there is still a few months left for 2026, but this one might be hard to beat!!
This tyre was fitted merely weeks ago but a rogue glass bottle at the side of the road was enough to destroy this once loved Schwalbe tires Super MotoX.

It is not often we get to see the cross section of a ‘new’ tyre, but here we are! So if you are ever in doubt as to why we recommend quality tyres for our commuter clients here is why, several ‘mm’ of rubber and protective core is usually good at keeping most stuff out, just not glass bottles!

For this customer new inner tube and tyre installed and they are back on their way for the daily ride to/from work.

Nice to enjoy the public holiday with the mini-clan members for a quick blast through some Pukete Farm Park trails.
This was the first trail ride for the youngest clan member since progressing to his ‘big bike’, he did great.

Today we pushed our limits, challenged ourselves to try new things and dug deep on the climbs, but all said and done, “When can we go again?” was the resounding call after a post-ride ice cream. 😀

We’ve been caught on 📷 working!! 🤣

Our busy week wrapped with a day at Crawshaw School servicing and preparing their bikes in preparation for their pupils to participate in Hamilton City Council programme with their Transport Education Team.

It is always great when we get to work with local schools who want to support and increase the number of pupils cycling, to/from and during school time.

Love this from Waikouaiti School, another great example of how bikes can teach young people/tamariki important life skills that will stay with them forever.

Important edit: This is not a school we work with or support, but sharing how they are embracing bikes as a tool to expand learning in schools, which is very much at the heart of our ethos too.
