🎓 Big Update for International Graduates in New Zealand

Immigration New Zealand has announced new and updated Post-Study Work Visa options aimed at helping international graduates transition into the workforce and contribute to New Zealand’s skills needs.

Key highlights:

✔ New Short Term Graduate Work Visa (launching late 2026)
Eligible graduates can receive up to 6 months of open work rights to find employment and potentially transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

✔ Post Study Work Visa eligibility extended
Graduates completing a Graduate Diploma (Level 7) may now qualify — provided they also hold a Bachelor’s degree (from New Zealand or overseas).

✔ Designed to support international graduates while maintaining New Zealand’s strong reputation for quality education.

These changes create more flexible pathways from study to employment for international students in New Zealand.

If you are currently studying or planning to study in New Zealand, this update could significantly impact your future visa options.

Major Immigration Changes Announced – Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)

Immigration New Zealand has released further details about significant changes to the Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa, which will take effect from late August 2026.

Key highlights include:

• New Trades & Technician Residence Pathway
• Introduction of Red and Amber Occupation Lists
• Simplified wage requirements for residence applications
• Extra points for qualifications completed in New Zealand
• English test validity extended to 5 years for registered professionals
• New CPA Australia pathway for accountants
• Option to extend AEWV by up to 12 months (from 2027) to complete work experience requirements

📰 Important Update from Immigration New Zealand (INZ)

From 3 November 2025, INZ will begin recognising 91 new occupations under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) programme — a key step in the move from the ANZSCO framework to New Zealand’s new National Occupation List (NOL) system.

✅ What’s Changing

91 new occupations at skill levels 1–3 will now be recognised under the NOL.

Existing AEWV holders in these roles may be able to stay longer than 5 years in New Zealand and bring family members.

Migrants in relevant skill level 4 or 5 roles may also be able to transition into one of the newly recognised NOL roles if they have:
• At least 3 years of directly relevant work experience, or
• A recognised qualification.

🧰 For Employers

You must still advertise the role and genuinely try to hire a New Zealander first.

Accreditation and a new Job Check application are required for these newly listed occupations.

The job description and pay rate must align clearly with the NOL role’s responsibilities and skill level.

Standard AEWV rules still apply — including wage thresholds, maximum stay of up to 5 years, and eligibility to support family visas.
