๐Ÿ Spaghetti September is here!

This September, Asco Legal is proud to support Bellyful as a local drop-off point for their Spaghetti September campaign. Bellyful supports local whฤnau by providing nourishing meals to families going through a challenging time.

Add an extra packet of spaghetti to your trolley and drop it off with us! Donation boxes will be inside the front door of our office throughout September, and weโ€™d love for our Howick and East Auckland community to get involved.

Letโ€™s get behind Bellyful and make Spaghetti September a success! ๐Ÿฉต

The best time to speak with us is before you sign.

A Sale and Purchase Agreement is not simply paperwork to secure a property. Once signed and accepted, it becomes a legally binding contract.

Before you commit, our team at ASCO Legal can review the agreement, explain the conditions and check whether anything should be added or amended to protect your position. This may include conditions relating to finance, a LIM report, a building inspection or the sale of another property.

We can also review the property title and identify easements, covenants or other interests that may affect how the property can be used.

Whether you are buying your first home, selling, investing or purchasing commercial property, getting legal advice early gives you the opportunity to ask questions while there is still time to address them.

Planning a property move? Speak with our team at ASCO Legal before you put pen to paper.

Selling a business involves more than agreeing on a price.

The sale agreement also needs to be clear about exactly what the buyer is purchasing, what happens to employees, whether a lease needs to be transferred, how intellectual property will be handled, and what warranties or restraints will apply after settlement.

These details matter because they shape your responsibilities once the business changes hands - and determine whether the transition runs as smoothly as everyone expects.

Getting legal advice early means the terms can be properly reviewed and negotiated before you are locked into an agreement. It also gives your lawyer time to work alongside your accountant, broker and other advisers to keep each part of the sale moving in the same direction.

You have put years into building your business. When the time comes to sell, the agreement should protect what you have built and give you a clear path towards what comes next.

ASCO Legal has a team specialising in business sales and purchases who can guide you through the sale, from the first agreement through to settlement.

Buying your first home comes with a whole new vocabulary.

LIMs, titles, conditions, settlement dates, and somewhere among it all, conveyancing.

Conveyancing is the legal work involved in transferring a property from the seller to the buyer. It includes reviewing the Sale and Purchase Agreement, checking the property title and relevant documents, keeping track of conditions and deadlines, and managing the legal side of settlement.

For home buyers, our role is also to explain what everything means, what needs your attention, and what happens next. Because while buying a home may be new to you, the legal process shouldnโ€™t feel like something you have to figure out alone.

One of the most important steps is having your lawyer review the Sale and Purchase Agreement before you sign it. Once signed, it becomes legally binding, so this is not a document to rush through.

If buying your first home is on the horizon, speak with the ASCO Legal team early in the process.

Selling a business can involve a lot of moving parts, from negotiating the agreement and working through conditions to coordinating advisers and preparing for settlement.

Our role is to keep the legal process clear, organised and moving forward. That means communicating openly, explaining what is happening at each stage and being available when questions come up.

A smooth settlement is important, but so is making sure our clients feel informed and supported from the first conversation through to completion.

That is the standard we aim to bring to every business sale.

Employment law in New Zealand has just gone through its biggest overhaul in over two decades.

The Employment Relations Amendment Act came into force earlier this year, and the changes are practical ones that affect how employers manage contracts, contractors, and dismissals - regardless of business size.

What does this mean in practice? Employment agreements that were perfectly compliant a year ago may no longer reflect the current rules. Contractor arrangements that have worked fine for years could now need a closer look. And processes around dismissals and grievances are not quite what they were.

This is one of those moments where it's worth checking that your employment foundations still hold up, rather than assuming nothing has changed.

We've broken down what the changes are and what they mean for employers in our latest Insights article.

If you only have ten minutes for a legal check-in this month, here's where we'd suggest starting:

1. Wills and enduring powers of attorney. Is it still accurate, and still naming the right people?
2. Are trusts being managed and reviewed as they should be, with proper records kept?
3. Key contracts - any renewal dates, notice periods or terms approaching that need attention?
4. Property and business structures. Are they still appropriate for where things stand now?

You don't need a perfect answer to all four. Even identifying one area worth a closer look is a useful outcome.

If any of these raise a question for you, we're happy to talk it through.
