Immigration NZ has announced that from 1 June 2026, English language requirements will also apply to some AEWV skill level 3 roles.

If you’re planning to apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa, it’s important to check whether your role is classified as skill level 3 and whether you may now need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

This could include:

• Previous work or study completed in English
• Citizenship from an accepted English-speaking country
• An approved English language test

There are also transitional arrangements in place for some existing AEWV holders.

The good news is that current visas are not being changed retrospectively, and the English requirement for AEWV applications remains lower than many residence visa requirements.

If you’re unsure whether this change affects your application, it’s worth checking early so you have enough time to prepare documents or arrange testing if needed.

Immigration New Zealand has now confirmed further detail around the Skilled Migrant Category changes taking effect from 24 August 2026.

That includes:
• Confirmed red and amber occupation lists
• Clarified pathway and eligibility requirements
• Updated wage setting rules
• Qualification and IQA requirements
• Changes to English test validity
• The future AEWV extension option for eligible migrants

For employers, these changes may affect workforce planning, retention conversations with migrant workers, and which roles may realistically support long term residence pathways moving forward.

For some workers, the updated settings may create clearer long term residence pathways. For others, particularly those in red or amber list occupations, eligibility may become more restricted or require higher thresholds to be met.
