Buc-ee's Founder Explains His Strategic Focus on Red States

Buc-ee's founder Aplin has offered a blunt rationale for why his convenience store empire concentrates expansion in conservative-leaning states: receptivity to growth and business operations. Aplin contrasted the experience of building in states with business-friendly regulatory environments and strong workforces against the friction he characterizes as present in less welcoming markets.

The framing touches on a broader debate about state competitiveness and business climate. Supporters of this approach argue that states with lighter regulatory burdens and pro-growth policies naturally attract entrepreneurial investment and create the conditions for expansion. Critics, meanwhile, contend that such narratives often oversimplify complex economic factors and can reflect partisan divisions that don't necessarily align with actual business fundamentals or workforce quality across regions.

What remains clear is that major corporate expansion decisions increasingly reflect calculations about state-level policy environments—a dynamic that underscores the competitive pressure states face to position themselves as attractive to private capital.

America’s justice system just revealed its most disgusting double standard yet when Martha Stewart went to federal prison for one stock tip while Nancy Pelosi and her husband rack up fortunes trading on information regular Americans will never see. One ordinary citizen gets five months behind bars for a single trade. A powerful Speaker of the House does it hundreds of times, walks free, and keeps cashing in. That is not justice. That is a rigged game designed to protect the political class.

Martha Stewart was not a politician. She was a businesswoman who made a mistake and paid the full price the law demanded. She served her time. Meanwhile, members of Congress, especially those with decades of power like Pelosi, treat the stock market like their personal ATM. They sit in classified briefings, write the rules that move entire industries, then somehow their portfolios magically outperform the market year after year.

Coincidence? Please. The data is public. The pattern is obvious. And yet no handcuffs ever appear.

This is the same system that lectures the rest of us about fairness and equity while insulating itself from consequences. Regular people lose jobs, homes, and freedom over far less. The political elite collect millions and call it “smart investing.” The STOCK Act was supposed to stop this. It didn’t. Disclosure is weak, enforcement is a joke, and the people writing the laws have zero interest in applying those laws to themselves.

If the rule of law still means anything in this country, it must mean the same rules for everyone. No special carve-outs for Congress. No free pass because you hold a gavel or a committee chair. Either ban members of Congress and their families from trading individual stocks, or start treating their trades with the same seriousness used against Martha Stewart. Anything less is an open admission that some Americans are more equal than others. The American people see it. They are sick of it. And they are done pretending this is normal.
