This has been a very busy month, but I could not let May end without celebrating Lupus Awareness Month.

Lupus is a complex, chronic autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people worldwide. As a proud lupus warrior, I know firsthand the challenges and triumphs of this journey. This month, let’s shine a light on what it means to live with lupus, celebrate the resilience of warriors like me, and educate others on this invisible battle.

Lupus can affect anyone, but it disproportionately impacts women, particularly women of color. It’s critical to understand that lupus occurs when the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, causing inflammation and damage. Symptoms can vary widely and may include:

✨ Debilitating fatigue
✨ Severe joint pain and swelling
✨ Butterfly-shaped rash on the face
✨ Hair loss
✨ Chest pain or difficulty breathing
✨ Fevers without infection
✨ Sensitivity to sunlight
✨ Kidney complications
✨ Headaches, confusion, and memory problems

I have suffered from a number of these symptoms. Despite trying numerous medications to manage my condition, many treatments had devastating side effects. The damage to my bones resulted in a hip replacement, and I’ve had to undergo a blood transfusion as well. Thankfully, I am now on a medication that has been able to control my symptoms, offering a glimmer of stability in what often feels like an uphill battle.

It’s important to recognize that lupus is an invisible disease. Many people living with lupus look “fine” on the outside, while enduring unimaginable pain and fatigue on the inside. This makes understanding and empathy so essential.

Through it all, I’ve learned the importance of work-life balance and prioritizing self-care to maintain my health.

This month, I encourage everyone to:
💜 Educate yourself about lupus and its symptoms.
💜 Show empathy to those who may be battling an invisible illness.
💜 Support lupus research and awareness efforts.

To my fellow warriors: You are strong, resilient, and never alone in this fight. Let’s raise awareness, share our stories, and advocate for better treatments and a cure. Together, we can make a difference!

I am incredibly honored and humbled to share that I have been nominated and elected as President-Elect of the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association! This association holds a special place in my heart. Over the years, it has become more than just a professional organization—it is truly like family to me.

During the Association’s meeting where elections were held, I was deeply touched to be nominated from the floor by a fellow bar member—a moment that filled me with immense gratitude and pride.

I am especially proud that my fellow members see the work that I do within and outside of the organization and believe that I am capable of leading the association when it is my time to do so. Their confidence in me is both humbling and inspiring, and it motivates me to give my very best in service to our mission.

Since becoming a member, I have been privileged to serve on numerous committees, work alongside some of the most dedicated and inspiring professionals, and proudly hold the position of Treasurer in 2018. These experiences have deepened my commitment to advancing our mission and supporting our incredible members.

As I step into this new role, I am filled with gratitude and a steadfast determination to represent our association with integrity, passion, and purpose. I pledge to continue our legacy of excellence and work tirelessly to uphold the values that have made the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association a cornerstone of our legal community.

Seventeen years ago today, on May 16, 2008, I walked across the stage as a proud graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law. But this day signifies so much more than just a diploma—it represents perseverance and determination.

In the midst of my second year of law school, I became a mother to my now 18 year old son. Balancing the demands of law school and single motherhood was no easy feat. There were times when I did not have a babysitter, and he sat alongside me in class and took in the lecture with me. He grew up watching me chase my dream, and I hope this shows him—and others—that with determination, anything is possible.

I am grateful to have had the privilege of being taught by some of the greatest legal minds. I also formed lifelong bonds with incredible classmates who became more than classmates. They are now dear friends who continue to inspire and uplift me.

Today, I am proud to own my own law firm. This is a testament to what is possible when you dream big and refuse to give up. To all the dreamers juggling life’s challenges while chasing your goals: keep going. You’re capable of more than you can imagine. Trust the process. The road may be long and exhausting, but the destination is worth every step.

Here’s to celebrating milestones, cherishing friendships, and embracing the journey ahead.
