Our most important tip: Stay calm! Stress makes people talk more, guess, or over-explain. 😰

Second, keep your answers brief. 🗣️

Lastly: don’t guess on ANYTHING. Not timelines, not drink counts, not “I think I’m okay to drive.”

Most people never expect to be in this situation, and when stress kicks in, it’s human nature to want to explain everything, fill the silence, or try to “help” the situation. But during a DUI stop, small statements can carry a lot more weight than people realize later.

Save this for just in case 📝

Calls from the DUI breath test room tend to come with…a lot of details. 😅

We’re here to help, even if it takes a minute to get a word in!

Help us celebrate two very special milestones! 🎓💙

Our two interns, Chloe and Ferris, are graduating from Gonzaga University School of Law this week, and we couldn’t be prouder of them both.

Since joining Cooney Law, they’ve brought so much to our team: hard work, dedication, and lighthearted energy that always kept us smiling. Chloe's 90's style, caring personality, and ability to Google or ChatGPT any answer in a flash will be sorely missed! And Ferris...without that quick wit, directness, and ability to morph into whatever role was needed, we'll all be scrambling a bit.

As we send them on their way to head into this next chapter to study for the bar exam, we will be cheering them on! Chloe is planning on pursuing civil law and hopes to focus on family law. Ferris is planning on studying for the Washington bar exam and has a job lined up in Wenatchee. He will continue to advocate for individuals charged with DUI and other criminal offenses.

We are so grateful they got to spend the last 9 months with us, and we are seriously going to miss them around the office 🥲💙

Help us celebrate them in the comments below, especially if you've ever interacted with them! 🎉

She was in a car accident and felt totally fine.

A few days later, the insurance company offered her $2,500 and said they needed a signed release to process the claim.
She signed, took the money, and moved on.

Then her neck started bothering her, so she went to her doctor. Her doctor told her it was likely a compressed disc that possibly even required surgery. The surgery would cost at least $50,000.

But her health insurance wouldn’t cover it because it was caused by her auto accident.

And the auto insurance wouldn’t cover it either…because she had already signed a Release and took the $2500.

This is one of those situations where you think, “I probably would’ve done the same thing.” You trust what you’re told by insurance and try to move forward.

But injuries don’t always show up right away, and once something is signed, it’s often final.

No judgment, but just a reminder: don’t sign anything until you understand the full picture. A quick conversation early on can make a big difference. 🔖

If these statements sound like something you could see yourself saying, our clients would say the same 😥

A DUI stop is one of the most stressful events, and in the moment, people aren’t trying to make things harder. They want to clear things up, be helpful, and be honest about what happened.

But in situations like this, even small statements can be misunderstood, taken out of context, or used later in ways you didn’t expect.

That’s why one of the most important things to remember is simple: you don’t have to explain everything in the moment. Stay calm, keep it brief, and ask for guidance before anything can be used against you.

Remember this if you’re ever in this situation 👈🔖

Most people think a settlement check is theirs to keep, but the reality is… ⬇️

A settlement is meant to cover more than what you take home: it’s designed to account for the full cost of the injury.

That can include:
💰 Medical bills
💰 Health insurance reimbursement (for what they’ve already paid)
💰 Attorney fees and case costs
💰 Out-of-pocket expenses (deductibles, copays, etc.)

Every case is different, but regardless, the injured party doesn’t keep 100% of the settlement because it’s meant to resolve everything related to the accident, including bills/expenses paid or covered by others.

The goal of a personal injury attorney is to help you understand that full picture, advocate for a fair outcome, and make sure those costs are handled in a way that supports your recovery and doesn’t eat into your bottom line.

Insurance companies are focused on resolving claims efficiently (and cheaply), which is why having someone on your side to look out for your interests can make a difference.

👉 If you’re unsure, it’s always worth getting guidance before signing anything. 💡
