You might be thinking, “My spouse will just use my password.” But what happens when a verification code goes to your unavailable phone? Or your spouse needs the provider’s help and must show their authority to act?

Knowing your password does not establish that authority. Providers have their own processes, and the legal authority your spouse needs depends on the account and applicable law.

Before your family needs access, identify which providers offer authorized-user or other approved access arrangements. Check when each option applies, including whether it works during incapacity or only after death.

Your backup beneficiary is not a backup detail.

You named your spouse first and your young children second. The form looks finished.

But if your spouse cannot receive the benefit, who could legally receive and manage your children’s shares?

Insurers generally do not pay proceeds directly to minors. Depending on state law and the arrangements in place, a court-appointed guardian or another authorized structure may be needed. A properly designed trust is one option.

Naming an adult instead, with a promise to “use it for the kids,” is not the same arrangement. That promise does not create the duties and safeguards of a trust.

I want your backup choice to work in practice, not simply look complete on screen. The article explains what to review before changing the form, including who receives the money and how your children would be supported.

You trust your spouse. You still want a plan for your children.
Those feelings do not contradict each other.

Imagine your $1 million life insurance policy is meant to support your spouse and eventually help your children from an earlier relationship. If your spouse receives the money outright, your shared hope about what happens later is not the same as an enforceable trust arrangement.

Your spouse’s future decisions, estate plan, and circumstances affect what remains.

A trust can provide for your spouse and direct the remaining funds to your children, if its terms are designed to do that. It also brings trustee decisions, administration, and practical questions about access to money.
