We are officially halfway through the year, which means mid-year performance reviews are likely on your radar. But here is some honest truth from an employment law perspective: they only actually help your business if you are being intentional.

If you treat reviews like a mindless, “check-the-box” administrative chore just to get them over with, it can actually backfire and hurt you in the long run.

Why? Because if an employee issue arises down the road, vague, sugar-coated, or rushed reviews can completely undermine your position if you ever need to justify a termination or disciplinary action. In the legal world, documentation is everything.

So, as you head into review season, remember: be intentional, provide real and honest feedback, and take the time to do it right. If you can’t commit to that, you’re better off not doing them at all.
