There is just something special about Washington State University. Nobody can quite pin it down. I’ve seen a lot of people try.

“It’s because it’s an isolated college town.”

“It’s the football team.”

“It’s Greek Life.”

“It’s a culture … emphasis on the ‘cult’.”

Whatever “it” is, there is something about a few years in Pullman that just changes a person, almost always for the better.

You can see it in the eyes of current students and hear it in the “Go Cougs!” exchanged across the country and around the world.

Anyone can see it, but not everyone can understand it. Sometimes, when I shake hands with a UW graduate, I sense a tacit pang of jealousy deep in their hearts. To attend a university so similar in name … but with no semblance of community … heartbreaking.

Aaaaaaaannnnnnnyhoooooodle…..

Since moving back to Washington State in 2025, I’ve been having a blast getting reacquainted with the WSU community. Wazzu is an awesome place, with awesome people. That means it cranks out a lot of badass business owners and alumni. I guess at some point those two groups hit a critical mass and something special was born.

CougsFirst! is an independent business network that connects Coug-owned, managed, and connected businesses and professionals. They do a lot, but my favorite thing they do is host two annual trade shows, one in Eastern Washington and one in Western Washington.

This Friday, November 6, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, I’ll be at the Cougsfirst! Eastside show at the Spokane Convention Center. If you’re in the vicinity, you should be there too!

The Longhair Lawyer will be shaking hands and rubbing elbows.

The Longhair Laborer will be talking shop.

The Longhair Linguist will be selling books.

The Longhair Lifestyle will be peddling its wares.

Come stop by! Attendance is free and open to anyone. You do not have to be a Coug to attend. I am just one of many, many vendors! There are folks from all sorts of industries, including groups selling food and adult beverages and (if my past experiences are any indication of this upcoming experience) perhaps giving away samples.

I missed opening day of elk season to handout candy to about a thousand kids in downtown Buckley. The number of little hunters wearing their dad’s camo hats made it worthwhile. A handful of kids telling their mom’s “that’s Jesus” was a nice bonus. Happy Halloween!!🎃

We’re on our way to a cocktail hour/networking event in Seattle! Then we’ll turn around and help handout candy with the Buckley Chamber Of Commerce on Saturday. This month has been chock-full of socializing and I’m all for it … but I’m kind of looking forward to slowing things down in November!

So, what is so great about Buckley?

For me, it starts with the geography. A flat city laid across a high plateau. The White River standing guard to the North. The Cascades rising to the East. Mount Rainier towering in the Southeast.

Then you have the size and the layout. Like my hometown, traveling from one side to the other is just a little juant. Notably, unlike some cities ….

Most people - even the ones who pay close attention to what I do with my life - have no idea that I run an online retail store. They see a hat or a shirt I wear and say “can I get one of those?” I tell them they’re for sale. They say they’ll get one, then usually forget.😂

The Longhair Lifestyle is a brand for everyone and anyone! Not just me. Over the past few years, while I’ve been slowly adding designs, I haven’t done much to promote this side of my business because: (1) I didn’t want people to think I cared more about selling T-shirts than being a lawyer or a contractor; and (2) maintaining my retail business doesn’t cost a lot, but putting serious effort into selling items takes a lot of time.

Over the next few months, I will be taking some steps to make it much easier for people to find my products and link them in social media posts. In the meantime, if you’ve spent the last three years thinking - man I’d really like a shirt like that - just find The Longhair Lifestyle website. It’s easy peasy.
