The combination of holiday road trips, massive college football home openers, and ongoing highway construction is creating an exceptionally high-risk environment for accidents in Louisiana.

Adding hundreds of thousands of vehicles to the roads, both LSU and Southern University are hosting their 2026 home openers in Baton Rouge on Saturday. Local police are deploying large units to the north and south ends of the city to manage the severe gridlock.

Active infrastructure projects, most notably the I-10 widening project in Baton Rouge, are significantly narrowing lanes and leaving zero margin for driver error. LSU Athletics has partnered with Waze to push real-time road closures, barricades, and parking pass routing directly to drivers. Officials stress that downloading the app is mandatory for accurate turn-by-turn navigation.
• Post-Game Contraflow: 🔁
Traffic flow on major campus exit routes will be converted to one-way "contraflow" during the games to move vehicles toward the interstates as quickly as possible.
