Dark clothes or no crosswalk don't settle fault on their own in Louisiana.

Fault is split by percentage, and a driver's speed, attention and headlight use all count. A rule change for crashes on or after January 1, 2026 makes that split matter more than ever.

The full story is in the first comment.

Most of our cases started as "just" neck pain. A minor injury can turn serious weeks later.

Chris Corzo Injury Attorneys Studied Louisiana's Deadliest Road Stretches — Baton Rouge Ranks #2

Chris Corzo Injury Attorneys analyzed 5 years of NHTSA crash data (2019–2023) to rank Louisiana's deadliest road stretches — and one ten-mile stretch right here in Baton Rouge came in second-deadliest statewide. The I-12 corridor between the I-10 split and the Corporal Shawn Kelly Memorial Blvd exit recorded 29 fatal crashes and 32 deaths. Heavy merging, heavy truck traffic, and constant exits make this stretch one to drive with extra caution. If you drive it regularly: commit to your lane before the split, not once you're already in it.

If Baton Rouge Police investigated your crash, getting your official report is more straightforward than a lot of people expect.

BRPD's Traffic Records Division offers three ways to get it: request it online through the city's official report request portal, pick it up in person at their headquarters on Airline Highway, or request it by mail with your file or report number included.

Reports are typically ready about 10 working days after the crash. The initial report costs $7.50, with driver or witness statements at $1 each. Questions about your specific request? BRPD's Traffic Records line is 225-389-3878.

That's exactly the kind of feedback that keeps us going — real people getting real, personal attention when they need it most.

At Chris Corzo Injury Attorneys, you're never "just a case number" — you're family from the first call to the final settlement. Thank you, Rachel, for trusting us and for sharing your story. 💛

Your inspection sticker is changing — mark your calendar for January 1, 2027.

Louisiana is swapping the old paper windshield sticker for a new QR-code vehicle ID sticker, capped at $6 a year.

One thing that isn't changing: drivers in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston, and West Baton Rouge Parish still need emissions testing. And no matter what's on your windshield, keep your brakes, lights, and tires in good shape — that's what actually causes most of the wrecks we see.

Most people assume the dangerous part of the drive is the intersection. Louisiana crash data says otherwise.

IIHS found that most fatal crashes happen away from intersections entirely — 83% of them in rural areas, 66% in urban ones. The real danger is the open two-lane stretch with no median, where a driver drifts, overcorrects, or crosses the centerline into oncoming traffic. FHWA ties crashes like that to roughly half of all U.S. traffic deaths, about 12,000 a year on rural roads alone. Put a median on that same highway, and head-on deaths drop to around 8% of fatalities.

felt this in 2024: 752 traffic deaths, a rate of 16.4 per 100,000 people, above the national average. A lot of it happens on the kind of unmedianed two-lane roads running through East Baton Rouge, St. George, and Ascension Parish, including the stretch between Gonzales, Prairieville, and Baton Rouge.

So the moment that actually matters isn't the next intersection. It's the open road ahead, with nothing but a painted line between you and the car coming the other way.

Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving are still the top three killers on Louisiana roads. Speed alone played a role in 28% of Louisiana's crash deaths last year, part of the 752 lives lost in crashes across our state in 2024.

We broke down the Top 10 Causes of Car Wrecks in Baton Rouge and across Louisiana: speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, running red lights and stop signs, reckless and aggressive driving, drowsy driving, improper turns and lane changes, bad weather, road hazards, and poor vehicle maintenance.

A few numbers worth knowing: distracted driving killed 3,208 people nationwide in 2024 (five seconds with your eyes off the road at highway speed is like driving the length of a football field blind), 30% of Louisiana's fatally injured drivers were over the legal blood alcohol limit, and NHTSA linked drowsy driving to 644 deaths in 2024.

Here's something else worth knowing: Louisiana now uses a modified comparative fault rule. Since January 1, 2026, a driver found more than 50% at fault for a crash can't recover compensation, but any share of fault at or below that line still lets you recover, just reduced proportionally.
