Last weekend, members of the Todd Walker team were proud to attend RealNZ's A Night for Nature in support of the return of kiwi pukupuku (little spotted kiwi) to Fiordland.

The evening brought together businesses, community leaders, conservation advocates and supporters from across the region, helping raise an incredible $240,675 on the night. Combined with RealNZ's ongoing Real Promise initiative, more than $310,000 has now been raised towards the translocation of kiwi pukupuku on Ao-ata-te-pō Cooper Island.

It's inspiring to see our community rally behind projects that will have a lasting impact on the landscapes and wildlife that make this place so special.

A huge congratulations to the team at RealNZ and everyone involved in making the evening such a success.

Changes could be coming to who pays when building work goes wrong.

The Building Amendment Bill would shift building defect claims from joint and several liability to proportionate liability. In other words, each party would generally only be liable for its own share of the loss.

The catch is what happens when one of the responsible parties can't pay. At the moment a claimant can look to whoever is still solvent. Under the proposed model, that missing share may simply go unrecovered. The Bill pairs the change with mandatory home warranties and professional indemnity insurance for design professionals to help cover the gap.

Submissions to the select committee are open. Our Civil Litigation team explains what it all means here 🔗https://toddwalker.com/news/building-amendment-bill

We are delighted to congratulate our clients, the residents of the Pegasus Golf Course, on the Minister's decision to decline Wolfbrook's referral application under the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024 for the residential redevelopment of the Pegasus Golf Course.

The decision marks an important milestone for residents who have worked tirelessly to ensure that their concerns were heard and the unique qualities of the Pegasus Golf Course and its role within the Pegasus community was acknowledged.

We are proud to have supported the residents of the Pegasus Golf Course throughout this process and acknowledge the commitment and collaboration of everyone involved.

Congratulations to the residents on achieving this significant outcome!

The Waimakariri Mayor says the decision to decline a controversial plan to rip up Canterbury's Pegasus Golf Course under fast-track approval is a wonderful win for the community.

It was great to have our Queenstown and Wānaka teams together last week for our Mid-Winter Team Conference.

The day gave us an opportunity to step back from our day-to-day work, discuss the future of Todd Walker, and spend time together as a team.

We were fortunate to work through a Leading with Purpose session with Monique Kelly, which sparked some great conversations about leadership, culture, and the kind of firm we want to continue building.

We rounded out the day with a Taskmaster challenge, which proved that while we're good at working together, we're also a highly competitive bunch.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect, reflect on where we're heading, and celebrate the people who make our firm what it is.

A big congratulations to Andrea Cotton who was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court on Friday.

Our Senior Associate, Rachel Kuklinski, had the honour of appearing as Andi’s moving counsel.

This is a significant milestone and reflects the hard work and commitment Andi has shown since joining the team as a Law Graduate. We are delighted to see her step into her role as a solicitor in our Property and Commercial team and begin this next stage of her legal career.

Last week we said farewell to the wonderful Jacqui Wilson, who has retired after almost 14 years with Todd Walker. Jacqui was one of the firm's first employees, starting out as a legal executive before moving into the role of trust account administrator.

She's seen the firm grow and change a lot over the years, and been a constant through all of it. A genuine safe pair of hands, Jacqui has been someone the whole team could rely on, and the firm is better for the years she's given it.

The team marked the occasion with a morning tea and a proper send-off to celebrate everything she’s brought to Todd Walker over the years.

We'll miss her, and we wish her all the best for a well-earned retirement!

Thinking about making changes to a cross‑lease property?

You may need your neighbour’s consent and they don’t always have to agree. A recent Court of Appeal decision clarifies when consent can be refused and what factors matter.

Our latest insight breaks down the approach in Liow v Martelli and when cross‑lease neighbours can reasonably refuse consent to alterations. Read more here: https://toddwalker.com/news/cross-leases-and-consent-to-alterations
