Can you ask staff to work longer during calving or lambing?

Potentially, yes – but it depends on the employment agreement and the circumstances.

Many farming roles involve seasonal peaks, but employers still need to meet their obligations under employment law. That includes acting in good faith, complying with agreed hours where applicable, ensuring employees receive the correct pay and breaks, and managing fatigue, and health and safety risks.

Planning ahead and having clear employment agreements can help avoid
issues when the busy season arrives.
