From UNLIMITED to 25 hours a week! A major change for Master’s-by-Research students in New Zealand.

Effective from 27 October 2026, new Master’s-by-Research student visa applicants will be limited to 25 hours of work per week while studying, with full-time work permitted during eligible holidays, subject to visa conditions.

Here’s what else you need to know:

1. Existing visa holders do not automatically lose their current work rights.

2. Eligible student visas will now allow 2 months after course completion instead of 1.

3. Immigration officers may request evidence of English language ability where concerns arise.

4. Visa processing may be suspended while education provider compliance concerns are investigated.

5,000 visa places for Indians. Two new work visas. Extended post-study work rights. Here's what's changing in New Zealand. 🇳🇿🇮🇳

Welcome to Issue 001 of The New Zealand Scoop by VisaWise NZ!

The India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement has brought some important immigration developments, and we're covering the details.

Here's the latest:

• 4,400 places under the new India Skilled Work Visa, covering selected roles in IT, engineering, construction, teaching, nursing and physiotherapy.

• 600 places under the India Iconic Work Visa, covering Indian chefs, yoga instructors, music teachers and AYUSH practitioners.

• Up to 3 years of stay under new work visa, subject to eligibility requirements.

• Up to 4 years of post-study work rights for eligible Indian graduates with New Zealand PhDs, effective 16 November 2026.

The 5,000 places represent the maximum number of visa holders at any one time, not an annual quota. The new work visas also require a qualifying job offer from an accredited New Zealand employer.
