If you’ve been waiting for your parents’ EOI to be selected, some important changes are coming from 5th October 2026.

Until now, Parent Resident Visa EOIs were selected mainly through a ballot, so a lot depended on chance. From 5th October 2026, that will change. Under the new system, 90% of EOIs will be selected in date order, while 10% will still be selected through the ballot.

That means a clearer, faster & fairer process, less reliance on luck, no need to reapply, and potential savings on repeat EOI fees.

FAQ: Is New Zealand introducing a new visa for international graduates?

Yes. From 16 November 2026, eligible graduates may apply for a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa. The visa will provide six months of open work rights, giving eligible graduates time to look for work and potentially move to an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

Applicants must generally:

•⁠ ⁠have completed an eligible NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualification
•⁠ ⁠have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks
•⁠ ⁠apply within three months of their Student Visa expiring
•⁠ ⁠have at least NZD $5,000 available

The visa can only be granted once.
