A master's student's study permit was approved — but the spouse's open work permit was refused for 'not enough home ties.' The first takeaway: a spousal open work permit is never automatic and never guaranteed, even when you are eligible. The officer still evaluates whether you are likely to return home, and with both spouses in Canada that concern gets stronger, not weaker. Express Entry: the French category draw sent out 5,000 invitations with a lowest score of just 382 on Aug 19, 2026. Compare that with the latest CEC draw — only 1,000 invitations and a 523 cutoff, on what is supposedly the flagship program. And if you study French and meet the requirement, you also earn an additional 25 or 50 points on top of your current CRS. The incentive to learn French has never been bigger. A viewer left an abusive spouse who had sponsored her, went on social assistance in the meantime, and was told the government would bill him and that he would use it against her. A sponsor signs an undertaking: in the application itself he stated he is responsible for her. So if she receives government assistance during the undertaking period, it is the sponsor the government can bill, not her. The obligation is his, both to her and to the government. A viewer's mother has been refused a visitor visa three times, and the family asked whether that will hurt a future PR sponsorship. It will not. Visitor visa refusals have no bearing on a PR application, even ten of them, because the process and the requirements are different.
