Happy Canada Day! 🍁

Every year on July 1, Canadians from coast to coast celebrate the birth of one of the world’s most welcoming, diverse, and peaceful countries.

But how did it all begin?

On July 1, 1867, the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick united under the British North America Act, creating the Dominion of Canada. This historic moment laid the foundation for the nation we know today. Over the years, Canada grew as more provinces and territories joined the Confederation, becoming a country recognized for its democracy, multiculturalism, respect for human rights, and endless opportunities.

Interestingly, the holiday wasn’t always called Canada Day. Until 1982, it was known as Dominion Day. Following the patriation of the Canadian Constitution, the holiday was officially renamed Canada Day, reflecting the country’s evolving identity and independence.

Today, Canada is home to people from every corner of the globe who contribute their cultures, traditions, languages, and dreams to build a stronger nation together.

Whether you were born here or chose Canada as your new home, today is a celebration of unity, diversity, freedom, and hope for the future.

Ontario launches a new OINP program

On June 26, 2026, Ontario officially launched Phase 1 of a major redesign of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP).

The province has closed 8 existing immigration streams and introduced a new program: Ontario Workforce Priority Stream.

Closed OINP streams

• Employer Job Offer – Foreign Worker
• Employer Job Offer – International Student
• Employer Job Offer – In-Demand Skills
• Master’s Graduate
• PhD Graduate
• Express Entry Human Capital Priorities
• Express Entry French-speaking Skilled Worker
• Express Entry Skilled Trades

EOI System

• The EOI system is currently closed.
• New EOIs cannot be submitted yet.
• The new EOI system is expected to reopen later this summer.
• Existing EOIs that did not receive an ITA will be automatically withdrawn. Applicants will need to submit a new EOI once the system reopens.

Applications already submitted after receiving an ITA will continue to be processed under the previous rules.

Ontario Workforce Priority Stream

TEER 0–3

Applicants generally need:

• Full-time permanent job offer
• Work experience:
– 6 consecutive months with the employer (last 12 months), or
– 3 months for recent Ontario graduates, or
– 2 years of experience in the occupation (last 5 years)
• CLB 6 (CLB 5 for some occupations)
• Post-secondary diploma or degree

TEER 4–5

Applicants generally need:

• Full-time permanent job offer
• 9 months of work experience with the employer (last 2 years)
• CLB 4
• Canadian high school diploma or equivalent

Other important changes

• Lower business revenue requirements for employers in rural and northern Ontario.
• Self-employed physicians may qualify without a job offer if they meet licensing and OHIP requirements.
• Response time for administrative penalties reduced from 60 to 30 days.
• OINP may now issue official notices by email.

This is the biggest redesign of the OINP in years. More details will become available when Ontario reopens the new EOI system later this summer.

If you were physically present in Canada while studying but worked remotely for a foreign employer, that experience may qualify as foreign skilled work experience and increase your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

For example, while studying in Canada, you may have:

• developed websites;
• worked in IT;
• provided online marketing services;
• completed accounting, engineering, or design projects;
• worked in sales or consulting;
• provided professional services remotely to an employer outside Canada.

To be eligible, the work experience must meet the program requirements:

✔ at least one year of continuous full-time work (or the equivalent of two years of part-time work);
✔ the occupation must be considered skilled;
✔ your job duties must match the appropriate NOC occupation;
✔ the experience must be properly documented.

A Real Case from Our Practice

Our client was 29 years old.

✔ Bachelor’s degree obtained in Canada.
✔ Two years of Canadian work experience.
✔ CELPIP – CLB 9.

His initial CRS score was only 490.

During our consultation, we discovered that while studying in college, he had worked part-time for two years remotely for a company in Kazakhstan.

He never included this experience in his Express Entry profile because he believed that work performed while studying could not be counted.

After reviewing the documents, we determined that this experience qualified as foreign skilled work experience.

The result? His CRS score increased from 490 to 540.

A single overlooked period of employment moved him from waiting for an invitation to becoming a strong candidate for receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

How Can This Experience Be Proven?

• A detailed reference letter from the employer confirming your position, duties, employment period, hours worked, and salary;
• Employment contract or service agreement;
• Pay slips and/or bank statements showing salary payments;
• Tax documents, where applicable;
• Invoices and proof of payment for contract work;
• If necessary, additional evidence such as emails, work records, project documentation, or other materials demonstrating that the work was actually
