š” Your kids may not keep your low property taxes when they inherit your home -and most families donāt realize this.
Californiaās Prop 19 changed the rules.
Hereās the simple version:
If your kids inherit your home, the property taxes may go way up.
To keep some of your lower property tax benefit:
š The home must have been your main home
š Your child must move in and make it their main home within one year
š There are limits on how much of the homeās value is protected
If your child decides to rent the home, use it as a vacation home, or keep it as a second home, the property will usually be reassessed at todayās value.
That can mean a BIG jump in property taxes. š³
