Starting a business or filing a trademark on your own can feel like a smart way to save money — until a small mistake turns into a major problem. We regularly speak with business owners who formed their own corporation or LLC online, only to later discover issues with ownership structure, operating formalities, stock issuance, contracts, compliance requirements, or liability protection. The same happens with trademarks. Many applications are filed without a proper search, incorrect descriptions of goods or services, weak specimens, or branding that creates conflicts with existing marks — often resulting in Office Actions, delays, or outright refusals from the USPTO.
The good news? Not every mistake is permanent. In many situations, legal issues caused by DIY filings can be corrected, repaired, restructured, or strategically addressed before they become even more expensive problems. Whether it is cleaning up a corporation, correcting internal records, restructuring ownership, responding to a trademark refusal, or evaluating whether a rejected trademark application can still be salvaged, experienced legal guidance can make a significant difference.
The earlier problems are identified, the more options you may have. Sometimes the solution is simple. Sometimes it requires a larger strategy. And sometimes, unfortunately, certain mistakes cannot fully be undone. That is why proper legal guidance at the beginning can save substantial time, money, and stress later.
If your DIY business formation or trademark filing did not go as planned, give us a call — we may be able to help.
