Looking for something special to do with the family this weekend? 🎈

The Great Reno Balloon Race is one of those Reno traditions everyone should experience at least once.

Bundle up, grab some coffee or hot chocolate, and head to Rancho San Rafael Regional Park early enough to catch Dawn Patrol at 5:30 a.m., when hot air balloons light up the sky before sunrise. Then stick around for Mass Ascension at 7:00 a.m., when up to 100 balloons begin filling the Reno sky.

It’s early. It might be chilly. But it’s one of those uniquely Reno experiences that makes getting out of bed before sunrise completely worth it.

Not necessarily.
Many people assume their will controls everything. But retirement accounts, life insurance, and payable-on-death accounts pass directly to whoever is named on the beneficiary form—regardless of what your will says.
This often leads to a first spouse, an ex, or an estranged family member unexpectedly inheriting a significant asset, while your current spouse and children are left with far less than intended.
It's a recipe for unintended heartbreak in an already emotional time.

A small phrase in your estate documents can make a major difference in who inherits what.

Per Stirpes (“by branch”):

If a beneficiary predeceases you, their share passes to THEIR children (your grandchildren)—not redistributed among surviving beneficiaries.

Example:

You have 2 children. One predeceases you, leaving 2 grandchildren.

With per stirpes: Surviving child gets 50%, two grandchildren split the other 50%

Without it: Surviving child could receive 100%, unintentionally cutting out grandchildren

Small wording, major consequences.

Documents to have accessible in an emergency:
✓ Copies of your will and trust (not just originals in a safe deposit box you can't reach)
✓ Powers of attorney
✓ Healthcare directives
✓ A list of key contacts (attorney, financial advisor, executor)
Consider a "grab-and-go" folder:
Keep copies of critical documents somewhere accessible during an evacuation—alongside passports and insurance papers.
If you were displaced this week and couldn't access your documents, that's worth addressing once things settle.
