Some days, this work breaks your heart in ways you can’t fully explain.
Because these aren’t just case numbers. They aren’t just motions, hearings, court dates, placement changes, or arguments about what the law says.
They are CHILDREN. Real children with real lives. Children whose futures are being shaped by decisions made in rooms they’ve never stepped foot in. Decisions that can change the entire trajectory of their lives.
And sometimes, the weight of that is almost unbearable.
I’m struggling with that today. I’m heartbroken. I’m angry. And I’m reminded just how much the culture of a broken system can matter. When we get so caught up in procedures, positions, and proving a point that we lose sight of the actual child at the center of it all, something has gone terribly wrong.
These cases are not about adults winning or losing. They are about children who only get one childhood. We don’t get to rewind it. We don’t get to undo the consequences of decisions once they’ve been made.
I know I can’t fix the entire system. I know I can’t control every decision, every outcome, or every person involved. But I can keep showing up. I can keep asking the hard questions. I can keep challenging the status quo when I believe a child/parent/family deserves better.
Because I refuse to become so accustomed to this work that I stop feeling the weight of it.
I want to believe we can do better. That we can build a culture where the child… not the case, not the adults, not the politics, not the process, is always at the center of every decision.
Until then, I’ll keep fighting to make a difference where I can.
But today? Today, my heart is broken. And I’m angry as hell.
We have to do better. ❤️‍🩹
