Another Downtown Trick or Treat Night is in the books! This year, there was a mishmash of costumes handing out candy at PCS Law. Stacie, Brian, Cheryl and Bailey always out do the rest of us with their commitment to a costumed event. We had two Dolly Partons- the alive kind. It is too soon for the other kind.
There were lots of little kids in the cutest costumes (that I mostly watched on the many security system cameras we have all over so I didn't cough the plague on anyone). Since we do not get to check out other candy stops and see other costumes if they did not make it as far north of the square as our office, tell us about your favorite costumes of the night.

We will see you next year!

Today, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey granted clemency to Toforest Johnson, commuting his death sentence to life without parole. This marks an important first step.

Toforest is innocent. He has lived under a death sentence for 28 years for the 1995 death of Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff William Hardy. Many witnesses placed him across town at the time. Prosecutors presented no eyewitness who identified him and no physical evidence connecting him to the crime.

In response to the governor’s clemency grant, Ty Alper, one of Toforest Johnson’s attorneys, made the following statement: “This significant milestone was made possible by Alabamians from all sectors of society united in their belief that Toforest does not belong on death row. That list now includes Governor Ivey. Toforest Johnson is innocent. Now it is up to the courts to overturn his conviction and grant him a new trial. We will keep fighting until he is home with his family.”

My friend Kristine Bunch. What a remarkable human being. If you can hear her story and not be devastated, angry and ready to do something about it, I cannot imagine what it would take to inspire you. Meeting her so long ago put me straight on figuring out what really matters to me. As hard as it is to know her story is not rare, the least we can do is acknowlege it and not stop talking about it

No amount of money is enough, especially when shared by so many wrongfully convicted people. A big number like this gets attention though and every eye focused on the evil-doers in the system helps

Chicago reached the largest police misconduct settlement in US history, $261 million, with 17 men framed by corrupt cop Reynaldo Guevara.

No matter your political position on the death penalty---this is barbaric. There is so much we can learn from these massive screwups, if we could just be bothered to try.

Last week, we got to participate in one of my favorite things- an adoption with the whole Fisher family, including bio parents involved. This family has been our clients for 1.5 to 2 years and they are so much fun- grandpa Dale has no fear of teasing me hard, so he gets it back from me, which adds some silly to important stuff. Seeing little man's newish siblings be so happy to be a part of this right along with everyone else cracks even my cold, black heart. Little man here is as cute as he can be-look at that grin. He is showing off Judge Weber's traditional gift at adoptions- a $1 bill folded into a heart.

Browning Adoption day part 2. This has to be the longest running adoption proceeding from filing to completion...it took most of five years. And that wasn't even the start of it! From original case opening in 2013, through a guardianship that began in 2017 that did not officially end until today, we finally hit the finish line today. There are two more Browning men in the world today, and for the first tine ever, these two brothers share a last name with each other and with mom and dad.

This winding road with these four people has been frustrating and heartbreaking and now it is exhilarating. This family will be hard to beat in the top ten most satisfying cases. Congrats, Brownings (times four)!!
