Filing an EEO complaint shouldn't mean having to worry about being punished for speaking up.

If your workload suddenly increases, you're passed over for opportunities, or your complaint becomes workplace gossip, pay attention to what's happening. The timing and circumstances may matter when determining whether an employer's actions could be retaliation.

I want federal employees to know that not every negative workplace action is illegal, but retaliation for engaging in protected EEO activity may be unlawful.

Think you may be experiencing retaliation after filing an EEO complaint? DM me or comment “case” so we can start the conversation.

Not every unfair situation at work is illegal discrimination, but some patterns may raise concerns worth looking into.

I encourage federal employees to pay attention when they're treated differently from coworkers, experience negative changes after reporting discrimination, or seem to face different rules and standards.

The details matter, including what happened and whether the treatment may be connected to a protected characteristic or a report of discrimination.

If you think you may be dealing with workplace discrimination or retaliation, DM me or comment “case” so we can start the conversation.

One thing I want federal employees to understand: reporting a workplace issue to HR doesn't necessarily mean you've started the EEO process.

Even if HR says they're investigating, an EEO deadline may still be running. In most cases, federal employees have 45 days from the discriminatory action to contact an agency EEO counselor.

Knowing who to contact and which steps to take can make a difference. If you're unsure whether you've taken the right steps, make sure you understand the process and the deadlines that may apply.

Save this post as a reminder, and share it with a federal employee who needs to know this.

Federal employees, don't assume you have to wait until you're ready to file a formal complaint before taking action.

In most cases, you must contact an agency EEO counselor within 45 days of the discriminatory action. There are exceptions, so it's important to understand which deadlines may apply to your situation.

I help federal employees navigate the EEO process, from initial counseling through later stages when applicable. If you have questions about your situation or important deadlines, my $199 attorney-led employment case evaluation is a place to start.

Having evidence of workplace discrimination is important, but knowing the right steps to take matters too.

I want federal employees to understand that documenting what happened doesn't automatically start the EEO complaint process. Missing an important step or deadline could affect your ability to pursue a claim.

If you're a federal employee dealing with workplace discrimination and aren't sure what to do next, book a consultation with me to discuss your situation and possible next steps.
