BEHIND THE SCENES ON THE LEVEE

What you are looking at is the future of Marietta's riverfront. Those curved forms taking shape in front of the Lafayette Hotel are the new amphitheater seating, the centerpiece of a $9.4 million transformation of our levee funded through the Ohio Appalachian Community Grant Program. This project has been in discussion since 1986, and it is finally happening. When it is finished, the levee will be a true front porch for our city, a gathering space designed for everyday life along the river, the bike path and riverwalk, school field trips, weddings, summer evenings, the holidays, and yes, of course, our beloved Sternwheel Festival. The improvements include brand new ADA accessible pathways, regraded streets at Ohio and 2nd, better seating and lighting, underground power lines for unobstructed river views, and 16 new canopy trees. The historic stones are staying right where they belong.

Our city, the design team, and the construction crews are pushing to have the work substantially complete by September 1, which means we will get to enjoy our reimagined riverfront for the 50th Annual Ohio River Sternwheel Festival on September 11 to 13. From the air, it is incredible to see it all coming together.
