The Spirit of Justice Award was created to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the Legal Aid Society's mission and have had a lasting impact on ensuring justice in our community. At this year's Journey to Justice we recognize the life and legacy of Bart Greenwald.

In remembering Bart Greenwald, we honor a life defined by action, compassion and an enduring commitment to others. His legacy lives on in every client served, every volunteer inspired, and every step taken toward a more just community.

Join us at the Legal Aid Society's Journey to Justice Friday, September 25th at 8 AM to honor Bart Greenwald's memory and legacy!

Please join us in celebrating an incredible achievement!

Our Veterans Legal Advocacy Program (VLAP) has been honored with the 2026 Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs Ambassador Award at the KDVA State Commanders Conference. This was awarded in recognition of their distinguished contributions and community service in support of our Commonwealth's veterans and their families.

We are especially grateful for the exceptional team behind this recognition. Pictured are Attorneys Caroline Pearce and Frank Bencomo. Also deserving of recognition is Andrew Skomorowsky, Paralegal, whose commitment helps make VLAP's work possible. We also extend our appreciation to Roy Berwick, who, even in retirement, remains a trusted mentor and supporter of the program.

Thank you all for your passion, advocacy, and service to our veteran community. We are proud of the impact you make every day and honored to celebrate this well-earned recognition.

Congratulations to our VLAP team!

We're excited to officially welcome Shauna Breeden to the Legal Aid Society team as our Chief Financial Officer!

With nearly two decades of experience in finance, including owning her own CPA firm, Shauna brings both expertise and dedication to Legal Aid. After spending the past year consulting with Legal Aid, she has already become a familiar and valued part of our team.

What makes this role especially meaningful to her is knowing that her work supports people who may not otherwise have access to the resources and services they need.

When not at Legal Aid, Shauna enjoys attending concerts (she's seen The Eagles over 5 times), reading thrillers, and relaxing on her porch.

Join us in welcoming Shauna to the Legal Aid team!

Legal Aid Society, in partnership with Goodwill Kentucky and with funding through the Louisville Bar Foundation, will hold an expungement clinic for low-income Kentuckians with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty guideline.

Expungement is how a record of criminal conviction is erased, destroyed, or sealed from a state record. An expungement order directs the court to treat the criminal conviction as if it had never occurred, essentially removing it from a defendant’s criminal record.

Recovery is about more than overcoming addiction - it's about having the opportunity to rebuild a life. In this video, Wesley Doak shares how a sports injury, substance use disorder, and involvement with the justice system could have defined his future. Instead, with determination, treatment, and the help of an expungement, he found a new path to serving his community as a firefighter. His story is a powerful reminder that second chances can change lives when people are given the opportunity to move forward.
