Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸

Today, as we celebrate Independence Day, we reflect on the words that helped define our nation’s founding:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Nearly 250 years later, those principles continue to serve as an aspiration and a foundation for the rule of law. They remind us that justice, equality, due process, and individual liberty require more than admiration—they require our continued commitment.

At Plata Schott Law, we believe the law is strongest when it faithfully protects the rights and dignity of every person. Today, we celebrate not only our nation’s independence, but also the enduring responsibility to uphold the ideals that inspired it.

On June 19, 1865, freedom finally reached the last enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas. Today we honor that moment — and the strength, culture, and contributions of the Black community here in Jacksonville and across the country.

Juneteenth reminds us that justice delayed is still justice worth fighting for. We’re proud to stand for equality every day.

Our office is closed today in observance of the holiday and will reopen Monday.

A wonderful evening for our partner Belkis Plata! 🎉

Last Thursday, Belkis joined the NextUp JAX Small Business Leaders of the Year Social — taking the stage as the 2024 NextUp JAX Small Business Leader of the Year on a panel with fellow honorees.

The panel included Darrin Eakins of DuBlase Whiskey, this year's 2026 Overall Small Business Leader of the Year. It was an inspiring night of swapping stories, lessons, and what it really takes to build a thriving small business here in Jacksonville. 💼

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is actively searching for 15-year-old Raegan Willowstone Lee. Sometime between 12:00 p.m. and 2:20 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, Raegan left her home in the area of Iron Creek Road near Armsdale Road. Due to the circumstances involved, we are asking for the public’s help. We’re working hard to return her home safely.

Raegan is 5’2” and 100 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. It is unknown what type of clothing she was last wearing. If you see Raegan or know where she is, call us at 904.630.0500. Please share this post so we can spread the word faster!

Today we honor the servicemen and servicewomen who gave their lives for this country — and we hold space for the families who carry that loss every day, not only today.

This day carries a particular weight for our firm. Our partner and co-founder, Belkis Plata, serves as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as an Assistant Judge Advocate General (JAG). To wear the uniform is to understand, personally, the cost behind this day — and the names behind it.

Today, the family of Charles Faggart moves forward in their pursuit of justice.

For the past 365 days, the family and friends of Charles Faggart have asked for one simple thing: the truth. For 365 days, they have been denied that truth, and with it, justice for Charles, who was brutally beaten and killed by officers within the Duval County Jail.

Within days of his passing, formal public records requests were made seeking information surrounding his death. Those requests have been met with silence. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff T.K. Waters, has blatantly violated Florida’s public records laws, denying the transparency and accountability the law requires and the public is entitled to.

Today, Belkis Plata, Partner at Plata Schott Law, and James Slater of Slater Legal, PLLC, on behalf of the family, filed suit against Sheriff T.K. Waters and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to obtain the complete public record related to Mr. Faggart’s death and investigation, including all video evidence.

The Faggart family is deeply grateful for the continued support from the community. The love and encouragement they have received, from those who knew Charles and those who did not, remain a source of strength as they continue their fight for justice.
