Today we honor the servicemen and servicewomen who gave their lives for this country — and we hold space for the families who carry that loss every day, not only today.

This day carries a particular weight for our firm. Our partner and co-founder, Belkis Plata, serves as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as an Assistant Judge Advocate General (JAG). To wear the uniform is to understand, personally, the cost behind this day — and the names behind it.

To everyone who gave everything: we remember you. 🇺🇸

Today, the family of Charles Faggart moves forward in their pursuit of justice.

For the past 365 days, the family and friends of Charles Faggart have asked for one simple thing: the truth. For 365 days, they have been denied that truth, and with it, justice for Charles, who was brutally beaten and killed by officers within the Duval County Jail.

Within days of his passing, formal public records requests were made seeking information surrounding his death. Those requests have been met with silence. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, led by Sheriff T.K. Waters, has blatantly violated Florida’s public records laws, denying the transparency and accountability the law requires and the public is entitled to.

Today, Belkis Plata, Partner at Plata Schott Law, and James Slater of Slater Legal, PLLC, on behalf of the family, filed suit against Sheriff T.K. Waters and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to obtain the complete public record related to Mr. Faggart’s death and investigation, including all video evidence.

The Faggart family is deeply grateful for the continued support from the community. The love and encouragement they have received, from those who knew Charles and those who did not, remain a source of strength as they continue their fight for justice.

Every parent assumes that the apartment complex where their family lives has taken the most basic steps to protect the residents who call it home.

In this case, that trust was broken. A convicted sexual offender previously convicted of manslaughter after killing a minor during a sexual assault and sentenced to decades in prison was allowed to work on the apartment complex grounds, giving him regular access to the property and the families who lived there. A simple background check could have prevented this.

Plata Schott Law is working alongside The Haggard Law Firm to pursue accountability and to highlight the importance of responsible screening practices in residential housing. Safety procedures are not just policies on paper, they are safeguards that families rely on every day.

Parents should not have to investigate whether basic screening was done where they live. That responsibility belongs to those entrusted with maintaining safe housing environments. When those responsibilities are ignored, accountability matters.

Today, the family of the child brutally attacked by Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officer, Stephen D. Hicks, retained Plata Schott Law to help them seek justice on behalf of their son.

After reviewing the facts of this case and Officer Hicks’s history thoroughly, we call upon our elected State Attorney, the Honorable Melissa Nelson to consider the more appropriate charge of felony Child Abuse in this case.

Officer Hicks’ actions were wholly unprovoked and egregious. Worse, he attempted to use this position of power as a law enforcement officer to justify his horrendous acts. We will seek all avenues of justice for this child, including representing the family in the prosecution pursuant to Marsy's Law. We are shocked that Officer Hicks’s attorney would falsely claim that the victim in this case was endangering another child, and we will not be silent in the face of such blatant lies.

If Officer Hicks’ actions were truly motivated by a desire to protect other children, as his attorney claims, there is no explanation for why he would then flee the scene. That conduct is inconsistent with any claim of lawful or good-faith intervention and instead reflects consciousness of guilt.

The family would like to express the sincerest thanks to the other children, parents, and bystanders who stepped in to protect their son from Officer Hicks.

"If I could give more than 5 stars I would in a heart beat." ❤️

These moving words are from our client, Melissa, who came to us after she and her daughter were in a car crash. It’s a journey no one chooses, but one you should never have to face alone.

We are so honored that Melissa put her trust in our team. She shared that we were "very professional and very helpful," and that Hazel "walked us through the whole thing."

Our greatest achievement was not only securing the policy limits for her and her daughter but also providing a sense of comfort and support during a difficult time. Melissa’s story is a beautiful example of the partnerships we strive to build.

If you or someone you know needs a team that will stand with you, we are here. Call or text us anytime at 904-619-5244.
