Before you head out for tricks and treats, here are five fun Halloween facts that might surprise you!

🎃 1. Jack-o'-lanterns weren't originally pumpkins!
In Ireland and Scotland, people originally carved spooky faces into turnips and other root vegetables. When the tradition came to America, pumpkins became the favorite because they were bigger and easier to carve!

👻 2. Halloween is more than 2,000 years old!
Halloween traces some of its traditions to Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season. People believed the boundary between the living and the dead became thinner during this time.

🍬 3. Americans spend billions on Halloween!
Between costumes, candy, decorations, and pumpkins, Americans spend more than $10 billion annually celebrating Halloween. That's a lot of candy corn!

🏠 4. Haunted houses have been entertaining Americans for over a century!
Early haunted-house attractions appeared in the United States during the early 1900s. Today, elaborate haunted attractions feature everything from Hollywood-style special effects to actors trained to deliver the perfect scare!

🐈‍⬛ 5. Black cats weren't always considered unlucky!
In ancient Egypt, cats were revered and associated with protection. Their association with witches and bad luck developed much later in European folklore. Today, they're just adorable Halloween mascots!
