African Americans made up 30% of the watermen in Camden County in the 1790's . Moses Grandy, born into slavery in 1786, was one of these watermen. Moses became known as Captain Grandy as a result of his skills as a river ferryman, canal boatman, schooner deck man, and lighter captain.
