17 Panels. 73 Panelists and Speakers. 375 Partners for Justice.

Last week, advocates for justice from across Maryland convened at PBRC's 27th Annual Partners for Justice Conference. The in-person event featured 17 panel discussions, with varied topics ranging from “Broadening the Bench: Legal Service Providers and the Path to Judgeships” to “Using Day of Hearing Representation to Provide Holistic Lawyering.”

This year, we were honored to have Zachary Perez, lead immigration attorney for detained clients at Sanabria & Associates, PLLC, provide the keynote address. During the morning and lunchtime plenaries, attendees also heard from legal leaders such as Supreme Court of Maryland Chief Justice Matthew J. Fader, Maryland State Public Defender Natasha M. Dartigue, Maryland Legal Services Corporation Executive Director Michelle Siri, Maryland Legal Aid Executive Director Vicki Schultz, and more.

Thank you to all our partners for making this such a meaningful and community-centered event! To learn more about the Partners for Justice conference, visit www.probonomd.org/conference.

Congratulations to the May 2026 admittees to the Maryland Bar!

Yesterday, new admittees took the Attorney’s Oath before the Supreme Court of Maryland. Valda Ricks, staff attorney with PBRC’s Courtroom Advocacy Project and President of the Monumental City Bar Association, addressed the incoming class of new lawyers and moved for their admission to the bar.

In her speech, Valda advised that the new admittees be committed to the following four principles during their career: Be professional. Be punctual. Be prepared. Be an advocate for pro bono service and volunteerism.

We have witnessed Valda embody these principles to every client she advocates for. At PBRC, Valda represents tenants in Baltimore City and Baltimore County district court when they need it most to avoid evictions and other adverse judgements. She truly exemplifies the highest standards of the legal profession, and is a shining role model for the next generation of advocates.

Congratulations again to the new admittees – we look forward to standing alongside you in the fight for equal justice for all.

This free event will feature food, drinks, and networking with other PBRC volunteers. Additionally, we will be honoring our graduating class of Professional Skills Academy fellows, who each completed 65 hours of pro bono service throughout the past year.

Come raise a glass among fellow advocates and mentors, and help us celebrate this year's Academy graduates and PBRC volunteers! Space is limited, so register as soon as possible to secure your spot at probonomd.org/2026-volunteer-appreciation-night.

The Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland (PBRC) is seeking community members to join our governing Board of Directors!

PBRC is Maryland’s hub for pro bono (free) civil legal assistance provided by volunteers. Equal access to justice is a core value of our nation, yet hundreds of thousands of our state’s residents cannot afford the legal help they desperately need and have no legal guarantee of a lawyer. As the pro bono arm of the Maryland State Bar Association - MSBA , PBRC plays a unique role as the training, support, innovation, and advocacy center for pro bono.

If you are interested in an opportunity to engage with others dedicated to upholding equal access to justice and furthering pro bono efforts in the state, then consider joining PBRC’s Board of Directors. We are especially interested in folks who have diverse backgrounds that include marketing and/or fundraising. You need not be an attorney to apply.

To recommend yourself or a colleague for a position on the Board, please submit a letter of interest along with a resume by May 20, 2026, to [email protected]. For additional details, please visit probonomd.org/our-board.

Thank you to everyone who took time out of their Saturday afternoon to come enjoy some pizza, refreshments, delicious homemade desserts, and great conversation!
