It was a true honour to be invited to the Forbes Cyprus Next Gen Banking & Fintech Summit 2026 organised by Phileleftheros Media Group. Some words worth taking away:

Tasos S. Anastasiou said that “Forbes Summit asks how a small island can build an internationally competitive financial sector.” A question that, I understand, requires us to look beyond individual businesses and consider how our whole financial ecosystem works together.

“Our ambition as a government is to strengthen Cyprus’s position as a trusted, agile, and internationally connected European gateway for financial innovation.” the President Nikos Christodoulides stated. Trust, adaptability and international connections are foundations we must keep building on, in my opinion.

“The banks, the big banks, have really won that war.” and I totally agree with Professor Costas Markides. A thought-provoking observation on the relationship between established banks and fintech, and how competition continues to evolve.

“Digitisation alone is not going to cut through bureaucracy and get rid of it.”, Dr Nicodemos Damianou, PhD mentioned. Putting a process online is only part of the work. The process itself must become simpler and more effective.

The risk needs to be regulated, not the novelty of the technology. Responsible innovation starts with understanding the actual risks and designing safeguards around them.

Cyprus is small. That is a fact but should not be a limitation. Our size need not define our ambition. Expertise, collaboration and trust can take us further.
