🚂 NOW & THEN: 1700 Douglas Street — 1905 & 2025

What a difference 120 years makes!

This remarkable “Now & Then” view at Douglas and Fisgard Streets captures the famous *Flying Dutchman* locomotive crossing Douglas Street around 1905, with one of Victoria’s early streetcars visible in the background. At the time, steam trains, bicycles, horse-drawn vehicles, and electric streetcars all shared Victoria’s growing streetscape.

The grand brick building behind the locomotive still stands today at 1700 Douglas Street, surviving through generations of change in the city. In the 2025 photo, automobiles have replaced locomotives and streetcars, and the building is now home to the beloved Beehive Wool Shop — a longtime Victoria institution for knitters and fibre artists.

It’s fascinating to imagine the sounds of steam whistles and rattling streetcars echoing through this intersection more than a century ago, compared to the steady flow of modern traffic today.

Special thanks for the colourized version of this historic image — it brings an entirely new life and perspective to early Victoria. 📸
